What's happening at WORD?

    Kris D'Agostino

Greenpoint's own debut novelist, Kris D'Agostino, signed

The Sleepy Hollow Family Almanac after reading for a standing-room-only crowd.

World Book Night is almost here! Our party plans are moving along nicely, and while there are still a few details in the works we are pleased to tell you that it will be at The Diamond, there will be a drink special for book-givers (whether or not WORD is your pick-up location), and some of our favorite local authors will be joining us to celebrate. More details are below; whether you're signed up or just like to talk books and hang out in bars, we hope we'll see you there!

This month's featured event at WORD!
Wednesday, April 25, 7 - 8 p.m.

Join acclaimed author Eloisa James for a special dinner and book talk. She's wowed us with her Regency romance novels for years, and now is giving readers a behind-the-scenes look at her life. Her new memoir Paris in Love documents the year she took a sabbatical from her job as a Shakespeare professor and moved with her family to France. Which made it the perfect opportunity for us to partner with fellow local business and our favorite French restaurant, Le Gamin! James will be introducing her book and chatting with attendees, in the ultimate night out for Francophiles.

Tickets are $45, and include dinner, drinks, and a copy of the new book. Space is limited, so reserve your spot now! Tickets are available in-store, online, or by phone. If you can't make the dinner, you can still reserve a signed and/or personalized copy of Paris in Love! Full details here.

UnterzakhnFor art fans and Yiddishkeit-curious:
Tonight, Tuesday, April 3, 7 p.m.

Launch Party for Leela Corman's Unterzakhn

Leela Corman is an artist and bellydancer whose graphic novel Unterzakhn (Yiddish for "underthings") transports us into the Lower East Side of the early 1900s, following young immigrant twins Esther and Fanya as they grow up in--and grow out of--their community. Add some Yiddish to your vocabulary, marvel at her top-notch storytelling, and join us for a presentation and launch party! Facebook RSVP appreciated.

I Hunt KillersFor fans of blood and gore and angst:
Tuesday, April 10, 7 p.m.
YA Not? with Barry Lyga

Staff favorite Barry Lyga (Goth Girl Rising, Mangaman) presents his newest novel, I Hunt Killers, in an interview with his editor Alvina Ling. Killers follows teenager Jazz, the son of a serial killer, as he tries to keep himself free from suspicion after several murders happen near his town and local police wonder if he's not following in Dad's footsteps. Jenn is refering to this one as Dexter Morgan meets Matt Saracen, which should give you some idea of how creepifyingly entertaining a read this is. Facebook RSVP appreciated.

Hollywood BoulevardFor silver screen junkies:
Wednesday, April 11, 7 p.m.
Launch Party for Janyce Stefan-Cole

Tapping her own experiences in Hollywood, debut author Janyce Stefan-Cole reveals the dark side of the silver screen in her debut novel Hollywood Boulevard. A lapsed actress, a private investigator, murder and mystery, celebrity and obsession all combine to make quite a tale. She'll present her novel at a launch party complete with refreshments. Facebook RSVP.

                    Power BalladsLargehearted BoyTen Thousand Saints
For fans of music and words:
Friday, April 13, 7 p.m.
Largehearted Lit with Will Boast and Eleanor Henderson

April's Largehearted Lit, a series that celebrates music, books, and their intersection, features Will Boast and Eleanor Henderson. Boast's short story collection Power Ballads follows working musicians from arenas to polka-bars, while Henderson's novel Ten Thousand Saints dives into the heart of the straight-edge scene in 1990s New York. They'll each be speaking about music's influence on their writing, as well as reading from their books, and will be joined by a guest musician. Facebook RSVP appreciated.

Hot StuffFor those who enjoy a good discussion about music:
Saturday, April 14, 3 p.m.
Music Writing Book Group: Hot Stuff

We're delighted to introduce our newest book group, led by Daphne Carr and Tobias Carroll. The best music writing isn't just writing about music: it can be a social history, a meditation on art, a discussion of race and class, or a gripping narrative. (Or some combination of the above.) This monthly book group will cover a wide variety of approaches to music writing, from histories of independent record labels to examinations of pop superstars to works that explore previously-obscure artists or scenes. We'll kick off with Hot Stuff, Alice Echols's acclaimed history of disco--which promises to show new layers to an often-dismissed style of music. For the May pick and all future selections, see our Book Group section below and/or the group page online.

Doodle NYFor young artists and scribblers:
Sunday, April 22, 1:30 p.m.
Drawing for Kids Workshop: Doodle New York

Author Puck and illustrator Violet will lead an interactive drawing workshop for kids organized around their activity book Doodle New York, which is filled with city landmarks and projects to spark imagination and curiosity. Recommended for ages 5 and up, all ages welcome. Facebook RSVP appreciated.

World Book NightFor all book-lovers everywhere:
Sunday, April 22, 7 p.m.

Join WORD for a book pick-up and party at the Diamond (43 Franklin St.)! We'll have drink specials and will be collecting gently-used books and cash to help support two places that help connect Greenpointers with books year-round: the Greenpoint Public Library and the Greenpoint Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks! Facebook RSVP appreciated.

All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.
Every time you attend an event, you get a chance to

Facebook RSVPs appreciated but certainly not mandatory.

Book groups

LiberationOur May pick for Book Group, Liberation by Brian Francis Slattery, is one of Jenn's top five favorite post-apocalypse novels of all time. America is an economic disaster, human beings are the preferred form of currency, and a former heist gang may be the best hope the country has of putting things to rights. Join us on Saturday, May 5, at noon for discussion and Cinco de Mayo treats. Bonus: Slattery will be at WORD for his new novel, Lost Everything, on Thursday, May 17, at 7 p.m., so you can ask him all your burning questions.

Fox in the AtticIn Classics Book Group, the next pick is The Fox in the Attic. (Hughes is technically Welsh, but don't tell anyone.) Set against the unstable world of Europe between World Wars as well as the unstable impulses of a man who thinks he's been wronged. We'll meet for discussion on Saturday, May 12, at noon. (Can't wait to find out what else we have planned for this year? The full list is up online!)

But BeautifulUp next for the Music Book Writing Group is Geoff Dyer's But Beautiful: A Book About Jazz. Dyer has a particular talent at writing about music, film, and literature, and this collection contains impressionistic portraits of jazz musicians. Drawing on photos, anecdotes, and, most important, the way he hears the music, he imaginatively reconstructs scenes from the embattled lives of some of the greats, including Lester Young, Charles Mingus, and Thelonius Monk. We'll discuss But Beautiful on Saturday, May 12, at 3 p.m.

As always, all books are 10% off in the month before their discussion. And if you need help remembering to mark your calendar, or can't make the discussion but still want to complain about that thing that happened on page 210, you can join our Facebook groups! There's one for the regular group and one for Classics
