Left to right: Guest booksellers Emma Straub, Sarah MacLean, Michael Showalter, and Amor Towles at our Holiday Open House
2011 was a year of change. We changed up the store layout; we launched Google ebooks on our website; we added the event raffle; we created our Staff Picks newsletter; we threw a lot of spaghetti at the wall, to see what would stick. And you guys have been with us every step of the way! We can't tell you how much your support means to us without getting verklempt and sniffling all over the keyboard, so suffice it to say: We love being your neighborhood bookstore, and we can't wait to see you in the store again soon.
After taking our traditional holiday break, the event schedule is back in full swing. Can't make it to something, but really want a signed book? We're happy to oblige! You can pre-order any of our visiting authors' books on the website, and let us know in the comments that you'd like a signed (and maybe even personalized!) copy. While we always have signed copies afterwards, they're first come, first served--but pre-orders are guaranteed. Order away!

For singletons of all stripes: Thursday, January 5, 7 p.m. Anna David, Beth Griffenhagen, and Rachel Kramer Bussel
In her new book Falling for Me, Anna David recounts how she suddenly found herself in her mid-thirties with two cats, one toolset she didn't know how to use, and zero romantic prospects on the horizon. A member of the Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists, and sex and dating advisor for Playboy, Details and Maxim, David is proudly single. She'll be joined by Beth Griffenhagen (Haiku for the Single Girl) and Rachel Kramer Bussel (Women in Lust). The reading will include a haiku contest, prizes, and refreshments! For those who live on the edge: Tuesday, January 10, 7 p.m. Emily Books presents Emily Carter
Emily Books' new selection is Glory Goes and Gets Some by Emily Carter. These stories follow our heroine Glory from a privileged but horrible Upper East Side childhood to the East Village and heroin addiction to rehab in Minnesota and HIV diagnosis. Cheerful, right? But Emily Books promises "it will make you involuntarily guffaw in many separate instances." Carter will be in conversation with Marco Roth of n+1. Facebook RSVP appreciated. For Nabokovians: Thursday, January 12, 7 p.m. Paul Russell, in conversation with Chris Bram
In The Unreal Life of Sergey Nabokov, Paul Russell re-creates the extraordinary life of the gay brother of Vladimir Nabokov, Sergey, and the rich and changing world in which he, his family and friends lived, from wealth and position in pre-revolutionary Russia, to the halls of Cambridge University, and the Parisian salon of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. Russell is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship and the author of six novels, as well as many poems, short stories and essays. He will be in conversation with Chris Bram, author of nine novels including Gods and Monsters (which was made into the 1998 movie of the same name). Facebook RSVP appreciated.
For those tired of their day jobs: Tuesday, January 17, 7 p.m. Gwen Cooper, Kate Rockland, and Gillian Telling
Looking to leave cubicle life for an adventure? Wish you could devote more time to your creative side? So did these ladies. Each left their jobs at Rolling Stone to write. Come find out how Gwen Cooper (Homer's Odyssey), Kate Rockland (150 Pounds), and Gillian Telling (Dirty Girls) made it in publishing. Cooper will be donating all royalties from the event's sales of Homer's Odyssey to the Picasso Veterinary Fund, and refreshments will be on hand courtesy of The Naked Grape and Hot Blondies bakery! Jesse Sheidlower, Editor at Large of the Oxford English Dictionary and author of The F-Word, knows his linguistic bombs. He'll give us a look behind the scenes at the OED, explaining how, when, and why vulgarities get included, why most dictionaries think that it's ungrammatical to [redacted] someone in the [redacted] with a [redacted], along with an overview of the f-bomb's role in language from the sixteenth century to Jon Stewart. Not for the easily offended! Facebook RSVP appreciated.

Book groups

Our next book group pick Among Others by Jo Walton. This is the most perfect book for those of us who grew up reading, especially lifelong sci-fi buffs. In addition to being a love letter to books, it's smart and has a good amount of magic without being annoying, and is just really great. Also available as a Google ebook, for the ereaders among us. We'll discuss it Saturday, February 4, at noon. No sign-up necessary; just read and join us!
In 2012, WORD will be taking a journey through the fantastic catalog of NYRB Classics, focusing on the Brits. Mr. Fortune is the first book up for discussion, on February 11th. It's hard to categorize, but perhaps it's fair to say that it reads as Heart of Darkness might have if Conrad had a sense of satire? Much like its setting, it's dangerously languid. As always, all books are 10% off in the month before their discussion. (Can't wait to find out what else we have in store? The full list is up online!)
