Literary Karaoke: Greatest Hits of the '90s

Introducing your new favorite monthly series, inspired by your favorite guilty Friday night activity.  Do you know whole passages of The Bridges of Madison County by heart? Or have a secret Grisham obsession? Think you've got literary chops? You've got three minutes to prove it by reading a passage from a book that will surprise and delight the crowd. Our theme for this month is Greatest Hits of the 90s, so you'll need to come prepped to read your favorite three minutes from a book published between 1990 and 1999. Sign-up starts at 6:30; come with a back-up passage just in case. It's better than waiting for a back room at Sing-Sing to belt Pat Benatar. BYOB! Facebook RSVP here

Book groups

Patterns of Paper MonstersOur book group pick for July is The Patterns of Paper Monsters by Emma Rathbone. It has one of the most unusual and startling voices we've read recently. The narrator, Jacob, is a teenage boy who is angry and violent, and whose anger and violence have just landed him in a juvenile detention center. He unexpectedly starts to fall in love with a girl in another part of the center around the same time that he meets David, a boy whose capacity for violence scares even Jacob, and suddenly he finds that he needs to make a choices he's never considered before. Sounds depressing--and it is, a little--but it also resonates with the unique optimism that only a confused teenager can have. We'll discuss on Saturday, August 6, at noon. The physical book is 10% off  in-store and online all month, and the book is also available as a Google ebook.
Brothers Karamazov
And continuing our year of Russian literature, our next classics book club pick is The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. This monster is at the top of many people's Always Meant To Read That lists; now's your chance to finally cross it off! Don't be frightened: due to its length and density, we'll be reading and discussing this book in three meetings over the summer. We'll start with a discussion of Parts I and II on Saturday, July 9, followed by discussion of Part III on August 13, and Part IV on September 10; all discussions will be at noon. Join us for any or all of the meetings. The book will be 10% off in-store and online until we finish it.
