What's happening at WORD?

Doggie

Look at that faaaaaaaaaaaaace!

From our event for Martin Kihn's Bad Dog on May 14.

China MievilleWe've got a few tickets left for one of our biggest events of the summer: China Mieville is coming to Brooklyn and WORD is hosting him! He'll be at Public Assembly in Williamsburg TONIGHT at 8pm (doors open at 7pm), first being interviewed by Lev Grossman (The Magicians) and then signing. Awesome dance party to follow. Tickets are $25 and include a copy of his new book, Embassytown. Tickets are available online (click here to buy) and in-store. If we have any left, they'll be available at the door, but we highly recommend buying them in advance.

BYOBAlso at Public Assembly in June, an event that we're happy to have donated a raffle item to: the upcoming Bring Your Old Books: A Community Book Swap And Benefit all afternoon on Sunday, June 19. At the BYOB event, you can bring books you don't need anymore and then rifle through everyone else's. A portion of the proceeds for books you take home will go to Housing Works, as will proceeds from the auction, at which you can win a WORD gift certificate (or a gift certificate to many other Brooklyn businesses, including our friends at Greenlight Bookstore). An anonymous publisher has pledged to match BYOB's donation up to $1500! In addition, any unswapped books will be donated to the bookstore. There really is no downside to this one, folks.

One more thing, as you peruse this month's events calendar: we're moving our event start time a bit so that we have more time for all the fun before the store closes. Beginning this month, our usual start time moves from 7:30pm to 7pm. We'll continue to have events on the weekends at different times. Hope to see you at one or more this month---read on for details on a creativity workshop, small kitchen dos and don'ts, shouting contest, Buddhist guru, and shark night!

All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Don't forget, every time you attend an event, you get a chance to enter our event book raffle, in which we raffle off a signed set of featured books!

Facebook RSVPs appreciated but certainly not mandatory.

Due to high expected attendance for this event and so as many of China's fans can see him as possible, it is ticketed and will be presented at Public Assembly; standing room only, ages 21+. Tickets are $25, available in-store or online. Each admits one person and includes one copy of Embassytown; books will be signed at the end of the event!

Thursday, June 2, 7 p.m.: The President Is a Sick Man with Matthew Algeo
President Is a Sick ManIn The President Is a Sick Man, author and journalist Matthew Algeo offers the first full account of a monumental political scandal that shook the Gilded Age. In celebration of Straub's collection Other People We Married, this month's Just Working On My Novel is for stories that end in 10 minutes. When the time goes off, we want to have heard everything. Think you've got what it takes? Email russ@russcomm.net to sign up to read... or just come, have a drink, and listen to the amazing Emma Straub read from a work both published AND unpublished. Book Groups
Dud AvocadoOur book group pick for June is The Dud Avocado. This cult classic, reissued by New York Review of Books in 2007, follows a young American girl on a trip to Paris in the 1950s and is perhaps the only book still in print to boast a blurb from Groucho Marx: "I had to tell someone how much I enjoyed The Dud Avocado. It made me laugh, scream, and guffaw (which, incidentally, is a great name for a law firm)." The perfect smart-set summer read. We'll discuss The Dud Avocado on Saturday, July 2, at noon, and it'll be 10% off in-store and online all month!

Brothers KaramazovAnd continuing our year of Russian literature, our next classics book club pick is The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky. This monster is at the top of many people's Always Meant To Read That lists; now's your chance to finally cross it off! Don't be frightened: due to its length and density, we'll be reading and discussing this book in three meetings over the summer. We'll start with a discussion of Parts I and II on Saturday, July 9, followed by discussion of Part III on August 13, and Part IV on September 10; all discussions will be at noon. Join us for any or all of the meetings. The book will be 10% off in-store and online until we finish it.
