What's going on at WORD?
|
| Here at WORD we're giving you a number of tools to beat back the long cold nights: not just great books, but also an author-packed launch party for our beloved Jami Attenberg on Thursday, Patton Oswalt at the Warsaw this weekend, and the one and only Eloisa James at the end of the month. Scroll down for more information.
We're also moving into the future, here at WORD. Over the holidays we started noticing a trend. Every few days one of our customers would come in, browse a bit, pick out something to buy, and then at the counter, would say, "I'm so sorry, but I have to tell you something. I've been reading books on my iPhone." Or: "I asked for an e-reader for Christmas. I want to shop here, but..."
"That's okay!" we'd say. "You can buy your ebooks from us!" And we're not kidding.
Starting a few weeks ago, we began offering Google eBooks for sale through our website, which means that wanting to read electronically and wanting to support your neighborhood independent bookstore are no longer mutually exclusive desires. You can get WORD favorite Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell or December bestseller Just Kids by Patti Smith. Google eBooks work with Sony Readers, nooks, and Kobo readers, and can also be read using the free Google eBooks app available for iPhone, iPad, or Android phones. In fact, basically the only device that can't read a Google eBook is the Kindle. The books are stored in the cloud, which is a fancy way of saying that if you start Skippy Dies on your phone during your commute, and if you want to read more of it on your computer when you get home, your computer will know where you left off on your phone.
You can also come to WORD for advice on ebooks and the various things that you can use to read them. There are a lot of choices for e-reading out there, and it's all changing pretty fast. But we're doing our best to keep on top of all of it---we've all downloaded books from the site and read them on a number of different platforms, so we're happy to help in any way we can.
And, of course, we'll keep having a bookstore full of books, the physical kind with the pretty covers and the paper, too. Best of both worlds!

January events at WORD
|
| We're starting the new year with a new program! In the spirit of "you can never have too many books," a personal motto of ours here at WORD, we're excited to announce a new perk for event-goers. At each WORD event you attend, you'll get a chance to enter your name into a drawing to win a copy of every book featured at every event from the prior four months. That's right: All. Of. Them. Considering that we average around 10 events a month, and often feature more than one author, that's a shot at over 40 books. Oh, and did we mention they'll be signed?

Tuesday, 1/11, 7:30 pm: A Skeptic's Guide to Writers' Houses with Anne Trubek Why is it that we visit writers' houses? Illustrated with beautiful line drawings by John Hubbard, Skeptic's Guide is a must for book-lovers. Join Trubek for a slideshow and reading, followed by a Q&A and signing.

Monday, 1/31, 6:30 pm: Writing Workshop with Justin Kramon Debut novelist Justin Kramon (Finny) will conduct a workshop designed to provide resources for writers trying to publish their short stories, find an agent, or place a novel with a publisher. It took an embarrassing number of attempts to find the publisher for his novel, so he thought it might be helpful to other writers to compile some of the resources from which he drew to get Random House to take pity on him. Feel free to bring questions about the publishing process. Sponsored by the Greenpoint Writers Group, which meets regularly at WORD.

Book Club
| | Our book club pick for February is We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. This chilling book is a series of letters from a shaken mother to her husband after their child commits the unthinkable: a school shooting. As she looks back over his childhood and her parenting, it becomes harder and harder to tell who's to blame---if anybody is to blame at all. Dark and rich.
We'll discuss We Need To Talk About Kevin on Wednesday, February 2 at 7:30pm and Saturday, February 5th at noon. It'll be 10% off in-store and online all month. Remember, all you need to do to participate is read the book and show up!
