What's going on at WORD?
|
| Do you think John Waters matched his socks to our logo on purpose? From event at Coco 66, 9/10/10.
What ISN'T going on at WORD? No really -- it's been busy around here. Our September was jam-packed with events, including the very memorable John Waters (pictured above, sort of), a joint event with Greenlight Bookstore for Mo Willems and Knuffle Bunny Free at the Brooklyn Public Library, and back-to-back events for WORD bestselling authors Charles Yu and Emma Donoghue. Not to mention we have a new full-time events manager, Jenn Northington, who you will all love as much as we do. October is no months for slackers, either: this coming weekend we'll be Comic Con in Booth #2122 with Random House, providing books for signings and just generally adding to the awesome. If you're going, check out our killer Making of Star Wars promotion -- you could get a limited-edition poster! And then there are our in-store events, involving everything from tattoos to cake. Because that's how we roll. |

Thursday, October 7, 7:30 pm: YA NOT? with Kate Milford This month's YA NOT? features Kate Milford and her novel The Boneshaker,

folklore, tall tales and steampunk. The Boneshaker, a WORD staff favorite since it came out, is great for 10 and up. YA NOT? is a literary salon for
not-so-young-adults (though all fans of teen fiction are encouraged to

will read from the novel and preside over a cake-off in

well as hundreds of oral interviews with refuseniks, activists, Zionist
"hooligans," and Congressional staffers, exploring the ways the exodus put
human rights at the center of American foreign policy for the very
first time, helping to end the Cold War. Facebook RSVP here.
Wednesday, October 20, 7:30 pm: Dancing in the Echo Chamber: Brooklyn and Her Lit Mags The Council of Literary
Magazines & Presses estimates that there are currently over 600
literary magazines published in the United States. Brooklyn is
particularly active in the lit mag world: a number of prominent journals
are based in the borough, and dozens of new titles are started here each year. In an age when readers have access to unlimited free
content on the web and even major publishers are struggling to stay
afloat, why do so many people still put so much time and energy into
publishing literary magazines? And why are Brooklynites, in particular,
so attached to the genre? Editors from Assembly, Tin House &
Electric Literature will hash out these issues in a discussion moderated
by WORD manager Stephanie. Facebook RSVP here.
Friday, October 22, 7:30 pm: Just Working On My Novel with Emily Horner Just Working On My Novel, the
curious, bi-monthly drunken new works critique series, is hosted each
month by a beloved published author who reads from works new and old. The esteemed author host for October will

comics, using various panels, backgrounds and word balloons/sound
effects. Facebook RSVP here.

answer questions from the audience. Facebook RSVP here.

of the entwined lives of landowners and their retainers on the Gurmani
family farm in Lahore, Pakistan.
