What's going on at WORD?

Protecting WORD
Some not-so-young-adults await
Mockingjay's release.
WORD basement, August 23, just before midnight.

Before we go any further, you asked, we answered: we're going to be open even longer! Starting Tuesday, September 7th, WORD will be open from 11am-9pm every day, seven days a week.

Here at WORD, we're getting ready for a crazy month of events (did someone say John Waters?) We're super excited about all of them, but when we were offered the chance to host the authors of two of our favorite fall releases, back-to-back, we almost fell off our seats. In the last week of September, Charles Yu and Emma Donoghue will both visit WORD, and we want everybody we know to read these books and meet their fabulous authors. To try to convince as many of you as we can to try these books out, for the entire month of September, both Yu's How To Live Safely In A Science Fictional Universe and Donoghue's Room will be 20% off when purchased together.

And that's just for starters. You like Mo Willems? We got Mo Willems. You like massive borough-wide book festivals? We'll be at one. You like groundbreaking memoirs? All over that. A dance party for your kids? Readings of some of the best new fiction in the country? We're here for you. Read on.
September events at WORD

We want you to enjoy the last lazy days of summer, really we do. (Hopefully with a good book.) But we are also just too excited about September to wait until after Labor Day to share what we have planned.

Wednesday, September 8, 7:30 PM:
Paperback Launch for The Adderall Diaries

An Intimate Conversation with John Waters
TICKETED EVENT!
Join WORD and the one and only John Waters at Coco 66 for an amazing event. Waters will be interviewed by Carolyn Kellogg of the Los Angeles Times, and will answer questions and sign books. Role Models is a self-portrait told through intimate profiles of favorite personalities-some famous, some unknown, some criminal, some surprisingly middle-of-the-road. This event WILL sell out---buy your ticket today!

Our event with John Waters is a Brooklyn Book Festival Bookends event, because that Sunday, September 12th, we'll be taking a little piece of Greenpoint to Borough Hall for the third annual Brooklyn Book Festival. Visit our booth #31 right by the International Stage in Cadman Plaza at Borough Hall. We'll be selling books for the authors speaking on that stage, plus we will have a mini-version of all the very best from our store right in our booth. Check out the festival website to see all the great events they are hosting that day and Facebook RSVP so we know you plan on stopping by!

Charles Yu Reads From
How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe
Joined by special guests Brian Francis Slattery and Jonathan Berger, WORD welcomes the author of one of our favorite books of the fall. Slattery, you may already know, is much loved here at WORD, and awesomely, reads with a band. Yes, a band plays while he reads his fiction. Jonathan Berger makes his own music while performing his poetry. So, all in all, it will be a fantastic evening! Facebook RSVP here.

Monday, September 27, 7:30 PM:
Emma Donoghue Reads From Room
Emma Donoghue is known best for her contemporary and historical novels from the points of view of adult women, like Slammerkin and The Sealed Letter, but her newest book, starts from a completely different place: the world of a young boy who has lived in the same small room his entire life without ever leaving. It's eerie in its simplicity and nearly impossible to walk away from. Donoghue will visit us for a reading, Q&A session, and book signing. Facebook RSVP here.

Book Club
The Windup GirlOur book club pick for September is Bad Marie, by Marcy Dermansky. This book is one of the most compulsively readable we've picked up this year. Marie is a beautiful woman who becomes a nanny for her childhood friend after being in jail for six years (for being an accessory to murder). But her best friend is married to a famous French novelist who Marie adores. And Marie is confused about who she loves, and thinks she might be a better mother than her friend, and compulsive above all else, and things get out of hand very quickly...

There will be two special treats for our meeting on Saturday, October 2. First, we'll be joined by author Marcy Dermansky when we talk about her book, and second, there will be chocolate pudding for everybody! (You'll know why after you read the book.) Due to Marcy's visit, we'll only meet once: Saturday, October 2, at noon. Bad Marie will be 10% off all September at WORD and online.
