We're skulking in front of the A/C here on the corner of Franklin and Milton, and invite you to join us. But that doesn't mean we haven't planned anything fun for you during these dog days! Read on to learn about our event with the beloved Christopher McDougall, author of
Born To Run (the inspiration for our WORD running group!) as well as an adults-only midnight party to celebrate the release of
Mockingjay, the finale of
The Hunger Games trilogy.
As you probably know, we moved everything in the store around a few weeks ago, and one of the reasons was to make room for all the great books coming out this fall.
Remember, as you salivate over this glorious list, if you pre-order and pre-pay for any unreleased book, you get 10% off the cover price:
And the Pursuit of Happiness by Maira Kalman. You might remember seeing this in the
New York Times---Kalman traveled the country after the 2008 elections, looking at democracy in the United States. Just as beautiful as her work always is.
C by Tom McCarthy. A new novel from the author of
Remainder. We heard a rumor that it's so good, someone with an advance copy has already read it more than once.
Dogfight, A Love Story by Matt Burgess. We know we have a lot of readers in Queens, and we know they're sick of Brooklyn getting all the attention. So they'll all be thrilled by this fast-paced joy of a debut novel, which gives the borough all the (tough) love it deserves.
FreeDarko Presents: The Undisputed Guide to Pro Basketball History. As a bookstore with its own basketball league, we really don't think there's a better fit for us anywhere else in the fall releases.
Stranger Here Below by Joyce Hinnefeld. A new and beautiful novel from the author of WORD staff favorite
In Hovering Flight.
How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu. This is THE debut novel of the fall. We PROMISE. Incredibly, incredibly good. Don't come in the store during September if you don't want to be talked into buying it.
Listen to This by Alex Ross. New readers are still discovering
The Rest is Noise here at WORD every week, and now, for those of us already smitten, a collection of Ross's writing from
The New Yorker.
Great House by Nicole Krauss. Krauss's
The History of Love is a favorite among WORD
staff and customers alike, and this book looks to be just as good.
My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me edited by Kate Bernheimer. This fairy-tale-inspired collection of stories has one of the best lineups in modern literary history: Kelly Link, Aimee Bender, Neil Gaiman, Lydia Millet, and Gregory Maguire.
Room by Emma Donoghue. You might not think you would like a book written from the perspective of a five-year-old kid who has lived in the same small room his entire life because he and his mother are trapped by a psychopath. But that's because you haven't read this book yet!
Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers. A new picture book from one of Brooklyn's favorite author/illustrators, and this one is about penguins, so of course it is irresistible.
And that's just the beginning---there are twice as many books that we could have listed here, including new books from William Gibson, Judd Apatow and Stephen King and the paperback release of books from David Byrne, Michael Ruhlman, Tracy Chevalier, Wallace Shawn, Libba Bray, and E. L. Doctorow. We're continuing to expand our new romance section and to fill in our bigger fiction section with more books from the authors you love. We're hoping that covers just about everybody's reading tastes, but if not, let us know what you think we should be carrying!
That's all for now, but make sure you keep an eye out for next month's newsletter. Not only are we lucky enough to be hosting the above-mentioned Charles Yu, Emma Donoghue, and Joyce Hinnefeld in the store in September, but also,
John Waters is coming to Greenpoint and you won't want to miss that...
