What's going on at WORD?

Protecting WORD
On Saturdays, WORD requires a little extra security.

We're skulking in front of the A/C here on the corner of Franklin and Milton, and invite you to join us. But that doesn't mean we haven't planned anything fun for you during these dog days! Read on to learn about our event with the beloved Christopher McDougall, author of Born To Run (the inspiration for our WORD running group!) as well as an adults-only midnight party to celebrate the release of Mockingjay, the finale of The Hunger Games trilogy.

As you probably know, we moved everything in the store around a few weeks ago, and one of the reasons was to make room for all the great books coming out this fall. Remember, as you salivate over this glorious list, if you pre-order and pre-pay for any unreleased book, you get 10% off the cover price:

CAnd the Pursuit of Happiness by Maira Kalman. You might remember seeing this in the New York Times---Kalman traveled the country after the 2008 elections, looking at democracy in the United States. Just as beautiful as her work always is.

C by Tom McCarthy. A new novel from the author of Remainder. We heard a rumor that it's so good, someone with an advance copy has already read it more than once.

Dogfight, A Love Story by Matt Burgess. We know we have a lot of readers in Queens, and we know they're sick of Brooklyn getting all the attention. So they'll all be thrilled by this fast-paced joy of a debut novel, which gives the borough all the (tough) love it deserves.

I Lego NY windowFreeDarko Presents: The Undisputed Guide to Pro Basketball History. As a bookstore with its own basketball league, we really don't think there's a better fit for us anywhere else in the fall releases.

Stranger Here Below by Joyce Hinnefeld. A new and beautiful novel from the author of WORD staff favorite In Hovering Flight.

How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu. This is THE debut novel of the fall. We PROMISE. Incredibly, incredibly good. Don't come in the store during September if you don't want to be talked into buying it.

Great HouseListen to This by Alex Ross. New readers are still discovering The Rest is Noise here at WORD every week, and now, for those of us already smitten, a collection of Ross's writing from The New Yorker.

Great House by Nicole Krauss. Krauss's The History of Love is a favorite among WORD staff and customers alike, and this book looks to be just as good.

My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me edited by Kate Bernheimer. This fairy-tale-inspired collection of stories has one of the best lineups in modern literary history: Kelly Link, Aimee Bender, Neil Gaiman, Lydia Millet, and Gregory Maguire.

RoomRoom by Emma Donoghue. You might not think you would like a book written from the perspective of a five-year-old kid who has lived in the same small room his entire life because he and his mother are trapped by a psychopath. But that's because you haven't read this book yet!

Up and Down by Oliver Jeffers. A new picture book from one of Brooklyn's favorite author/illustrators, and this one is about penguins, so of course it is irresistible.

And that's just the beginning---there are twice as many books that we could have listed here, including new books from William Gibson, Judd Apatow and Stephen King and the paperback release of books from David Byrne, Michael Ruhlman, Tracy Chevalier, Wallace Shawn, Libba Bray, and E. L. Doctorow. We're continuing to expand our new romance section and to fill in our bigger fiction section with more books from the authors you love. We're hoping that covers just about everybody's reading tastes, but if not, let us know what you think we should be carrying!

That's all for now, but make sure you keep an eye out for next month's newsletter. Not only are we lucky enough to be hosting the above-mentioned Charles Yu, Emma Donoghue, and Joyce Hinnefeld in the store in September, but also, John Waters is coming to Greenpoint and you won't want to miss that...

Due to McDougall's popularity and our limited space, this is a ticketed event. The ticket price of $25 includes one copy of Born To Run. Buy your ticket today!

The Chairmen of the Bored Storytelling Night
Every story's got a hook. For the next 5 Minute Series event, we're supplying one for you. "And That's When I Knew..." is the theme behind this storytelling night. Come up with something to share, or just stop by for a beer and a high-five! Also, check out COTB's new book recommendations on our shelves.

Monday, August 23, 10:30 pm: Mockingjay
21+up Release Party for Mockingjay (pre-order required)
First it was The Hunger Games. Then it was Catching Fire. And now the trilogy completes with Mockingjay. We're celebrating the adult fans of this series during our 21-and-up midnight release party. The fun kicks off at 10:30pm and ends at midnight, when we'll hand out Mockingjay to all. A pre-paid pre-order is necessary to attend, and all pre-orders paid for before 8/16 receive 10% off. Party will include: booze and homemade bread (go Team Peeta!), trivia (because all nerdy midnight release parties require trivia contests), awesome prizes, archery, and a Katniss lookalike contest. Pre-order the book today.

Unexpectedly MiloWednesday, August 25, 7:30 pm:
Matthew Dicks reads from Unexpectedly, Milo
Join us for a reading, discussion and booksigning with Matthew Dicks, author of Something Missing, the story of an accomplished thief with OCD and what happens when he's suddenly plunged into the lives of his victims; it was one of WORD's surprise favorites when it was released last year. Dicks will read from his new book and be interviewed by friend and colleague Kim Damokosh. Facebook RSVP here.

Saturday, August 28, 1:00 pm:

FREE Magic Show for Kids!Mario
As part of the Greenpoint Business Alliance's Last Saturdays of Summer, Mario the Magician performs an uplifting, inventive and highly interactive magic show for the young and young-at-heart. The 35-40 minute show is reminiscent of old-time slapstick performances, at once ridiculously silly and meticulously crafted. Mario is accompanied by his beloved handcrafted props, trusty top hat, and Mozzarella the Dove.
Book Club
The Windup GirlOur book club pick for August is The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi. From the jacket: "Anderson Lake is a company man, AgriGen's Calorie Man in Thailand. Under cover as a factory manager, Anderson combs Bangkok's street markets in search of foodstuffs thought to be extinct, hoping to reap the bounty of history's lost calories. There, he encounters Emiko. Emiko is the Windup Girl, a strange and beautiful creature. One of the New People, Emiko is not human; instead, she is an engineered being, creche-grown and programmed to satisfy the decadent whims of a Kyoto businessman, but now abandoned to the streets of Bangkok..."

The Windup Girl is 10% off all month, and we'll discuss it Wednesday, September 1 at 7:30pm, and Saturday, September 4 at noon. Remember, all you have to do is buy the book, read it, and show up to discuss (or just listen)!
