Click on any of the book covers for more information and to buy them (remember, free shipping on orders over $50, or if you pick up your order in the store).

How do we have room for all these new books, you ask? If you've dropped by the store in the last day or two, you already know the answer: we moved everything around. We considered adding a picture of our refurbished digs in the newsletter here, but instead, we want to reward YOUR photographic talent. So here's the deal. Take a picture of the inside of the renovated store and send it to info@wordbrooklyn.com before the end of the month, and we'll send you a coupon code for 20% off your next purchase. And then we'll pick our favorite of the bunch, and whoever wins will get something awesome!
June events at WORD
Eating the DinosaurTuesday, July 13, 8 pm at Cocos: Chuck Klosterman
It's Chuck Klosterman in conversation with his pal Rob Sheffield. We're hosting an intimate event at Greenpoint bar Coco 66. You'll get to see Chuck shoot the shit with Rob, author of Love Is A Mixtape and the newly-released Talking To Girls About Duran Duran. Chuck will take questions from the audience and sign books as well. Tickets are $20 and include one copy of Eating the Dinosaur. Tickets can be purchased here. Please note: tickets WILL sell out, so don't delay purchasing!

Kaboom
Wednesday, July 14, 7:30 pm:
Matt Gallagher and Kaboom
When Lieutenant Matt Gallagher began his blog with the aim of keeping his family and friends apprised of his experiences overseas, he didn't anticipate that it would resonate far beyond his intended audience. When the blog was shut down in June 2008 by the U.S. Army, there were more than twenty-five congressional inquiries regarding the matter (as well as reports through the military grapevine that many high-ranking officials and officers at the Pentagon were disappointed that the blog had been ordered closed). Join us for a reading, conversation and book signing with Matt Gallagher, author of Kaboom: Embracing the Suck In a Savage Little War. Matt will be joined by Specialist Philippe Dume and Sergeant Joe Dougherty. Facebook RSVP here.

Clone Wars Encyclopedia
Saturday, July 17, 2 pm:
Clone Wars Day at WORD
Jason Fry, Brooklyn-based author of the Star Wars Clone Wars Character Encyclopedia, will be on hand signing copies of the book and answering questions from the audience. Fans will find all the stats they need, from Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber skills to Ziro the Hutt's scheming, and everything in between. We'll also have costumed Star Wars characters from the 501st Legion, giveaways, raffle, crafts and more. Recommended for kids ages 5 and up, especially those who are going to dress up! Facebook RSVP here.

MeeksTuesday, July 20, 7:30 pm: Julia Holmes and Meeks
Launch party, reading, and book signing for Meeks by Julia Holmes, complete with Independence Day cake and drinks. Meeks portrays a world at once hilarious and disquieting, in which frustrated revolutionaries and hopeful youths suffer alongside the lost and the condemned, just for a chance at the permanent bliss of marriage and a slice of sugar-frosted Independence Day cake. Meeks evokes the strange charm of a Haruki Murakami novel in a dystopic setting reminiscent of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, and is one of WORD's favorite debut novels of the year. Facebook RSVP here.

Tutor  Nine Rules  Carnation  I Lego NY window

Thursday, July 22, 7:30 pm:
WORDs of Love: A Night of Romance
We're celebrating romance novels with a fantastic panel of writers and readers! The panel will include Lauren Willig, author of the bestselling Pink Carnation series; acclaimed author and blogger Sarah Wendell from SmartBitchesTrashyBooks.com; Hope Tarr, author and co-founder of Lady Jane's Salon, New York's monthly romance reading series; and editors from Romantic Times magazine and Avon Books. Moderated by Sarah MacLean, author of Nine Rules To Break When Romancing a Rake, the panel discussion and Q&A will uncover the genre--highlighting the books we love and the readers who love it. Facebook RSVP here.

Make These Toys
Saturday, July 24, 3:00 pm:
Make These Toys
Author Heather Swain will demo how to make several fun toys from her new book, Make These Toys: 101 Clever Creations Using Everyday Items. This guide focuses on fun, homemade projects using materials anyone can find around the house or that can be purchased for a fraction of what a commercially-produced toy can cost. There will be a craft for both kids and adults to enjoy. Bring the whole family for an afternoon of fun! Facebook RSVP here.

Saturday, July 31, all day:
Join us for the second Last Saturdays of Summer in Greenpoint. We'll be hosting a book swap to benefit the Greenpoint Public Library. Everyone is invited to bring up to five books that they'd like to swap, and take up to five, leaving a dollar donation per book. All proceeds go to the library! Learn more about this ongoing series here.

Don't forget this month's book club, Sunday morning running group and Monday evening writers' group. All our events are listed here and you can RSVP for many of them on Facebook here. RSVPs are encouraged but not required. All events free unless otherwise noted. See you this month at the store!
Book Club
K Blows TopOur book club pick for June is K Blows Top: A Cold War Comic Interlude Starring Nikita Khrushchev, America's Most Unlikely Tourist. Structured in three parts to mirror Khrushchev's three visits to the US, this is one of the funniest and most well-researched books we've come across in a long time. Every word hilarious, scary, and mind-blowing. The ultimate truth-is-stranger-than-fiction tale.

We'll discuss K Blows Top on Wednesday, August 4 at 7:30pm, and on Saturday, August 7, at noon. As always, the book will be 10% off in-store and online all month. Haven't been to book club before? That's okay! All you need to do is read the book and then show up to discuss. Nothing fancy about it.
