What's going on at WORD?
|
| Bookseller Anna and Nancy Drew prepare to investigate The Case of Why Are Books So Awesome.
We're getting ready for a summer full of good books and great events here at WORD. Flavorpill recently posted our grown-up summer reading list, which included: Click on the pictures for more info! And come in and let us know what you're excited about reading this summer. Whether you're looking for beach reads or doing your own summer-long reading of Infinite Jest, we've got you covered. Our events will keep you cool all June,
including one about Hasids and peepshows (tonight!), as well as the only way to make baking more delicious (hint: there's alcohol involved). Well, our A/C will probably be what's keeping you cool. But come anyway. Just look how much fun folks had at our events last month: Left to right: Emily St. John Mandel reads from WORD bestseller The Singer's Gun; excited young artists show off their handiwork; four kids' graphic novelists enjoy each other's books; a packed basement listens to stories about moms; Daniel Handler pours out some cocktail therapy; and Franz Nicolay celebrates the launch of Kate Rockland's debut novel. Tons more photos on our Flickr page! |

Tuesday, June 1, 7:30 pm (TONIGHT!): Joshua Braff and Jonathan Tropper Joshua Braff will read from his new novel Peep Show--set in 1975, 17
year-old David Arbus' parents divorce and David has to decide between
embracing his mother's Hasidic sect or going into his father's line of
work, running a porn theater in the heart of Times Square. Jonathan Tropper will read from his latest novel This Is Where I Leave You, a riotously funny, emotionally raw novel about love, marriage,
divorce, family, and the ties that bind-whether we like it or not. Q & A and signing to follow the readings. Facebook RSVP here.
Thursday, June 3, 7:30 pm: Chairmen of the Bored's Five Minute Series: Let's Get... Awkward! Finally! Something good will come out of that time you ran into your
gym teacher at the strip club. Join
us on Thursday, June 3rd, for an evening of stories about your most
awkward moment. Sign up for your five minutes onstage, or just come
for a beer and some laughs. Either way, bringing your middle school
diary is encouraged...
Facebook RSVP here.
Tuesday, June 8, 7:30 pm: Five Hundred 45s: A Graphic History of the Seven-Inch Record Compiled by well-known designers and authors Spencer Drate and Judith
Salavetz, Five Hundred 45s contains more than 500 examples of striking
seven-inch record sleeve design across every genre of music and its
great musicians-all reproduced at full size. Join us for a discussion and show and tell. This event is co-sponsored by our Franklin Street neighbors Permanent Records. Facebook RSVP here.
Wednesday, June 9, 7:30 pm: Jenny Hollowell and Everything Lovely, Effortless, Safe Former Greenpoint resident Jenny Hollowell returns to the neighborhood
to launch her new book, Everything Lovely, Effortless, Safe. Hollowell's novel exposes the ambition and will of body doubles and
adult film extras. Everything Lovely, Effortless, Safe is the story
of a young woman's struggle to make her own way in the Technicolor land
of make-believe. Facebook RSVP here.
Thursday, June 17, 8 pm: WORD Prom Night Literary Matchmaking Mixer at The Diamond It's time for our next matchmaking mixer at The Diamond and this
time we will crown a king and queen of the prom! There will be drink
specials, all your favorite prom tunes from DJ RUSS COMM, a "worst prom
stories" contest, and a few authors will join us for the festivities.
Taffeta and ruffles not required
but certainly welcome. This is definitely a good way to meet people--we know for sure of at least two new couples that met at January's mixer--but at the very least, you shouldn't have any trouble finding a new makeout partner. Facebook RSVP here.
Tuesday, June 22, 7:30 pm: Boozy Baking with Lucy Baker Booze, baked goods and books - what more do you need to know? The Boozy Baker: 75 Recipes for Spirited Sweets is a collection of cakes,
pies, tarts, cookies and more, all of which contain a healthy dose of
alcohol. Lucy
Baker is going to share her "spirited sweets" with us--tips and
tricks, and nibbles, of course. Join us for a delicious evening including berry and cream cheese swirl brownies. Facebook RSVP here.
Friday, June 25, 7:30 pm: Just Working on My Novel moves to WORD! This month the bi-monthly new works critique series with alcohol features The Hole We're In with Gabrielle Zevin. Conceived by publicist Russ
Marshalek after he realized that everyone is always "just
working on their novels," JWOMN has evolved into a reading series with published author hosts for each
installment. Readings of all shapes and sizes occur, with only 3
stipulations: all those wishing to read must sign up ahead of
time; all readings must be NO longer than 10 minutes; all readings must be previously unpublished. Facebook RSVP here.
Saturday, June 26, 11:30 am: Monthly Kids' Event with Carin Berger Carin Berger is an award winning designer, illustrator, and author
based in New York. Her illustrations, cut paper collages, are made with
scraps of ephemera, used clothing catalogues, and old ticket stubs.
Basically, any odds and ends that she can find. Carin will read some of her books, including her latest, Forever Friends, and help us with a craft! FREE, for kids ages 3 and up. Facebook RSVP here.

Book Club
|
| Our book club pick for June is The City & The City by China Mieville. Set in two cities that literally exist on top of each other, this book takes the classic murder mystery, mashes it up with the best aspects of world-building fantasy, and creates an entirely new but somehow instantly classic type of book. You'll be so captivated by what happens next that you won't even notice it's blowing your mind.
We'll discuss The City & the City here on Wednesday, July 7 at 7:30pm and Saturday, July 10 at noon. (Slight change from the usual Saturday due to the holiday weekend.) As always, it will be 10% off in-store and online all month.
