What's going on at WORD?
|
| Are you a Junior Deducer? Try your skills in The Clock Without a Face, new from McSweeney's.
Happy May! We've got two fun promotions for you this month.
First, to make your Mother's Day celebrations a little easier, we're offering WORD TO YOUR MOTHER! Until Mother's Day (5/9), if you buy a present for your mom online, we'll ship it to her for free, complete with gift wrap and a little Mother's Day note. All you have to do is write WORD TO YOUR MOTHER in the comments section at checkout and we'll take care of the rest and ship it media mail free of charge. Stuck for gift ideas? We recommend the following. Click the pictures to learn more! You can also start your shopping from our home page, which is loaded up with new releases, or the search bar in the upper right corner. Is your
name Emily? Do you know an Emily? Then it's your lucky day. During the first week of May, anyone who can prove their name is Emily with a photo ID gets 20% off their purchases! That's because we're celebrating two book releases, each by an author named Emily---so we thought we'd spread the Emily love. (Scroll down for more information about our launch parties for Emily St. John Mandel and Emily Gould.) Our events schedule got a little spring fever this month---it's a long list!---but make sure you read all the way to the bottom. See that guy in the picture here? He's visiting us at the end of May, and you definitely won't want to miss it. We've got one of Roberto Bolaņo's translators, a graphic novel spectacular, debut novelists, yet another Bananagrams tournament, and even a chance to blame some folks who deserve it. |

by local Greenpoint indie Loudmouth Press. Blame Accountants set up impromptu "headquarters" in areas where
there is a high frequency of collective blame--Ground Zero, the
Republican National Convention, the Democratic National Convention and
Wall Street. Sitting unassumingly at a desk with a typewriter and red
phone, Blame Accountants invite passersby to blame, record, and reflect. Come by while they're in town and blame away (and check out their book). Facebook RSVP here.
Tuesday, May 11, 7:30 pm: The Titanic Awards with Doug Lansky The Titanic Awards: Celebrating the Worst of Travel is the indispensable collection of the worst travel
experiences from experts and regular people alike, whose tales of terror

writer Jason Cochran. Facebook RSVP here.
Thursday, May 13, 7:30 pm: Launch Party for Falling Is Like This Kate Rockland will celebrate the launch of her new novel Falling Is Like This, a punk rock love story set in the East Village and Coney Island

introductions! Facebook RSVP here.
Tuesday, May 25, 7 pm: Drinks with Daniel Handler at Coco 66 Join us for an hour (or two) with author Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket). Sip classic cocktails (whiskey and gin martinis) made by the fine bartenders at Coco66 and listen to Handler read from and talk about Bernard DeVoto's The Hour: A Cocktail Manifesto. One part celebration, one part history, two parts manifesto, Bernard DeVoto's book (republished this year by Tin House) is a comic and unequivocal treatise on how and why we drink-properly. Handler will be available to sign copies of his own books as well as The Hour.
Please note: this event with Daniel Handler is ticketed and we will only be selling a limited number of tickets. Tickets include admission for one, a book, and a drink ticket. Click here for more information and to purchase tickets online.
Think there's at least one program on this list that strikes your
fancy? We thought so. No excuses then, OK? We can't wait to see you at
WORD in May.

Book Club
|
| Our book club pick for May is Britten and Brulightly, a graphic novel written and illustrated by Hannah Berry. At first glance, this story about a detective and his partner---who is a tea bag (really)---seems like it will be light and whimsical. But though it never loses its charm, Berry uses many of the best elements of the traditional detective noir to create an unforgettable story.
We'll discuss Britten and Brulightly here on Wednesday, June 2 at 7:30pm, and Saturday, June 5 at noon. As always, it will be 10% off in-store and online all month. (And did you know that you can order it online but choose to pick it up in-store?)
