What's going on at WORD?
|
|
Now we are three. Photo taken February 2007, the month before WORD's opening.
It's true: WORD turns three in two weeks, and we couldn't be more excited about it. Thanks so much for helping us get on our feet these past three years---now we're going to learn to run! There's a great thank you gift in The Last WORD, so make sure you scroll down to read it. We're also hosting an anniversary party at The Diamond with Zane Lamprey Tuesday, March 16! Zane, host of the cult TV show Three Sheets, has a new book about drinking. The Diamond is a great place to
drink. Come raise a glass with us to celebrate three years in business
in Greenpoint. A perfect trifecta for a party! There will be
celebratory toasts, laughs and general revelry. Oh, and a drink special,
too: $1 off draft and bottled beer from 6-8pm. More info below in the events section. There's been a lot of great books coming out lately, and we're still highlighting them in our Largehearted WORD Books of the Week posts. Here are some of the books we were excited to see in the past few weeks: Don't forget: we're now hosting a writers' group biweekly and going to Gym Park to do storytime every week! This month, the Greenpoint Writers' Group meets Monday, 3/8 and Monday, 3/22 from 6-8pm. Email greenpointwriters@gmail.com for more information. And storytime is every Monday at 10:30am at Gym Park, right down the street from us, as part of Gym Park's Storytime Drop-In with Playtime ( more information here). We're also trying something new in the store after many requests, and have created a small bargain book section. We'll be hunting for good deals that we can pass along to you and displaying them in the front of the store. But they're all only here until the book sells out, so keep an eye out! Currently our bargains include Shortcomings by Adrian Tomine ( normally $19.95, now $6.98), Belchamber by Howard Sturgis ( normally $15.95, now $6.98) and Fixed Ideas: America Since 9.11 by Joan Didion ( normally $7.95, now $3.98). Finally, the date you've all been waiting for: the meetings for the second season of the WORD basketball league! Just like last year, all participants will be required to pass a (fairly easy) five question literary quiz, judge their own basketball skill, and sign a waiver. As such, all players will be required to attend a meeting in order to play. The meetings will be Monday, March 15 and Wednesday, March 17 at 7pm and shouldn't take more than half an hour (so no complaining about Wednesday being St. Patrick's Day!). Questions? Email stephanie@wordbrooklyn.com. |
March events at WORD
|
|
If you like tattoos, New York, indie presses, Russia or zombies, you are going to like our March events calendar. If you like all five, you are going to love it.
Thursday, March 4, 7:30 PM: I Love New York: 5 Minute Series Storytelling Night Everyone's got one of those stories, the ones that just sum up what
life in NYC is really like. Come by, crack a beer, and share yours--in
five minutes or less. Hosted by Chairmen
of the Bored, a great group of creative literary folks (who
all met while playing basketball at WORD on The Elements of Style.) Participation is encouraged but not mandatory. (RSVP to thechairmen@chairmenofthebored.com if you're
telling a story.) Facebook RSVP here.
Thursday, March 11, 7:30 PM: The Tattooed Lady: A History Join us for an evening with Amelia Klem Osterud, a tattooed academic
librarian from Wisconsin and the author of The Tattooed Lady: A History. She has a master's degree in history from the
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and writes and lectures on the
subject. We'll have fake tattoos too, of course! Facebook RSVP here.
Saturday, March 13, 3:00 PM: YA NOT? with Carrie Ryan YA NOT?, a literary salon for not-so-young adults, returns, and this month will feature Carrie Ryan,
author of one of the standout books of the recent glut of paranormal YA: The Forest of Hands and Teeth. We'll celebrate that book and its new sequel, The Dead-Tossed Waves. Zombie donuts will be served. YA NOT? is geared towards adult fans of teen fiction, but all fans of young adult writing are invited to attend! Facebook RSVP here.
Tuesday, March 16, 6:00pm: Third Anniversary Party at The Diamond with Zane Lamprey As the most recognized world drinking ambassador, Lamprey has imbibed his way through over 50 countries while shooting Three Sheets. He's enjoyed the finest Champagnes,
oldest Scotches, and most expensive Sakes. He has downed booze strong
enough to degrease an engine, danced with the green fairy (Absinthe),
and bathed in a tub of beer. Lamprey not only knows how to drink, he
also knows a lot about what he's drinking, so we're glad he'll be the one helping us celebrate our third anniversary! The bookstore
will close at 6 PM and we'll see all of you at The Diamond. From
6:30-7:30 pm ONLY, Zane will join us to talk about his drinking
adventures, answer a few questions and sign some books. After that, the
WORD anniversary celebration will continue through the evening -- so pop
in anytime! Facebook RSVP encouraged but not required.
Thursday, March 18, 7:30 PM: Indie Press Night: Vulgar Marsala, Two-Handed Engine, Emergency Press and MFG Imprint The first of two indie press
nights we have planned for March, this one features several authors with new
works from Vulgar
Marsala, Two-Handed Engine, Emergency Press and MFG Imprint.
Readings from: Jesi Bender, Chad Faries, Lisa
A. Flowers and Cesca Janece Waterfield. Learn more about the authors and presses here. Facebook RSVP here.

of Russian delights - history will be shared, music will be played, and
Russian delicacies will be served. Budem zdorovy! Facebook RSVP here.

Book Club
|
|
Our book club pick for March is Stoner by John Williams. The story is a basic one: a farmer boy is the first in his family to go to college, falls in love with literature, becomes a professor at his alma mater, gets married, has a kid, has a combative marriage, has an enemy in his department. Set in the Midwest and against the backdrop of the first half of the twentieth century, Stoner examines parts of the American experience rarely seen in literature. More importantly, this is probably the greatest book of the twentieth century that you've never read. Time to remedy that.
Stoner will be 10% off all month in the store and online, and we'll meet to discuss it Saturday, April 3 at noon and Wednesday, April 7 at 7:30pm.
