What's going on at WORD?
|
|
Left: The talented and delightful Isabella Rossellini at Coco66. Right: More talented and delightful authors bask in the digital fire of our yule log at Open House. (L to R: Sarah Manguso, Peter Brown, Charles Bock, Jami Attenberg.)
Before we go any further:
THANK YOU!
(Yes, you. And maybe the person behind you, too, if they also shop at WORD.)
You made 2009 WORD's best year ever, despite a recession and general fears that print had died and nobody was ever going to read anything ever again. You bought books, you told us which ones you loved (and hated), you came to support your favorite authors, you played nerd basketball, you took a chance on a new genre, you showed up first thing Tuesday morning to pick up the new release you just couldn't wait for--- you were the reason we opened our door every morning this year. And you're the reason we'll do it every morning in 2010. There just aren't WORDs for how much we appreciate you and how lucky we feel to be a part of the Greenpoint community. It is a pleasure to serve such a fascinating and delightful group of people and we welcome any feedback you have to help us improve the store for you. Look for even more new things in the new year---teacher discounts, school book fairs, more awesome events---as we strive to make this the best bookstore it can be! Even if that sounds cheesy, we're still going to do it anyway. And because sometimes words aren't enough, scroll down to The Last WORD to see how we're going to say thank you with our wallets as well. And because you can't play basketball in the winter (more because of the early sunset than the snow), WORD is going to try out another athletic event for nerds. This one won't be competitive, though. Spurred by the popularity of Haruki Murakami's memoir What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and Christopher McDougall's fantastic Born To Run, we're going to start a very informal running club. It'll work like this. You show up in front of WORD on Sunday morning at 10am, we go for a 2-3 mile run around Greenpoint at a VERY reasonable pace. If there's enough interest, we'll start splitting into separate groups, but we'll start here. Keep your New Year's resolution or keep yourself from going treadmill crazy over the winter. Just show up Sunday at 10am! We'll start 1/17.So, you thought because it was January, we'd slow down a little
with the events? You thought wrong, bub. Our matchmaking board has
spawned a singles' night, and in keeping with the zeitgeist, we've made
it 80s-themed. Julie Powell, Jedediah Berry and Jami Attenberg are all
coming to celebrate new books. But we're not just hosting writers whose
names start with J this month, amusing as that might have been. Scroll
down to see more. Oh, and there are still great books coming out. Jasper Fforde launches a new series with his Shades of Grey. If you loved his Thursday Next series, you'll love this one as well. Fforde's sheer joy in creating a new world vibrates through every page, and though there is more social commentary and this book goes to much darker places than Thursday Next ever did, it is still just a pleasure to read. It's sitting on our front table right now---come by while it's still around! On the kids' end of the store, we (and, more importantly, baby bookseller Adrian) are super into a new line of books for babies called Indestructibles. That's because they really are: you can't rip them, you can't bite through them, they don't go soggy. You can put them in the washing machine! The three released so far feature bright pictures of animals but no words, so your child can look on his or her own or you can make up a story to read along with them. Check out this link to see how strong they are, and check out the kids' section to give them a try. |
This month at WORD
|
|
We're starting off the new year with a solid schedule of events!
There is a mix of book launches, readings and some special non-author
programs too. All the details are on our calendar and here's a summary of what's coming up:
Wednesday, 1/13, 7:30 pm: Julie Powell will read from and discuss her new book, Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession. Julie Powell thought cooking her way through Julia Child's Mastering
the Art of French Cooking was the craziest thing she'd ever do--until
she embarked on the voyage recounted in her new memoir. Her
marriage challenged by an insane, irresistible love affair, Julie
decides to leave town and immerse herself in a new obsession: butchery. Facebook RSVP here.

Thursday, 1/14, 7:30 pm: Witty Women Writers at WORD! Bloggers, performers and writers Sara Barron (People Are Unappealing: Even Me), Doree Shafrir (co-author of Love, Mom: Poignant, Goofy, Brilliant Messages From Home) and Claire Zulkey (An Off Year) read from their humorous books. Facebook RSVP here.
Saturday, 1/16, 3 pm: Bananagrams in the Basement!
We're obsessed with this fast-paced anagram game - it's like Scrabble
without the board (or those pesky points). Join us for some afternoon Bananagrams WORD play...and some banana-themed edibles. Yum. If you're new to the game (you lucky dog, you), check out the instructions here. We've got Bananagrams for sale in the store and online if you want to practice beforehand! Facebook RSVP here.
Wednesday, 1/20, 7:30 pm: Esther Smith demos some of the fantastic crafting projects in her latest book, The Paper Bride. Great tips for brides-to-be, wedding planners or any crafty sorts. The one-stop guide to making a celebration that's all about you with
ubiquitous, affordable, recyclable paper! Letterpress artist, designer,
and once-bride Esther Smith will inspire you with one-of-a-kind
invitations, albums, guest books, and more. Facebook RSVP here.
Thursday, 1/21, 8 pm: Matchmaking 80s Dance Party! Join us at The Diamond Bar for an 80s music mixer to celebrate our Between the Covers matchmaking board. All book lovers are invited to mingle (and dance, of
course). DJ RUSSCOMM (who loves Bret Easton Ellis and went on two dates
as a result of our matchmaking board) will spin the tunes. Drink
specials, raffle prizes, and literary love jokes throughout the night. Facebook RSVP here.
Tuesday, 1/26, 7:30 pm: Jedediah Berry: The Family Grill To celebrate the paperback release, a reading and roundtable featuring the author of The Manual of Detection, his sister, his brother, and his other brother. Sure to be a good time (at least for his siblings and for the audience). Haven't read it yet? Why not? The New Yorker called it "the kind of mannered fantasy that might result if Wes Anderson were to adapt Kafka" and you know you love that sort of thing. Facebook RSVP here.
Thursday, 1/28, 7:30 pm: Jami Attenberg will read from and discuss her latest novel, The Melting Season. Already loved by half the WORD staff, this is "a tender, provocative story about the power of friendship, the thrill
of self-discovery, and the strength it takes to escape the past." Facebook RSVP here.
Saturday, 1/30, 10:30 am: We'll be making sock puppets and celebrating Sandra Boyton's One Shoe Blues.
We'll provide the materials to create fun sock puppets, plus there will
be healthy refreshments, (fake) tattoos, coloring, bingo and more. This event
costs $5 per child (no book purchase necessary) and is the first in a
new kids' event series we will host on the last Saturday of each month. Facebook RSVP here, but make sure you've also bought a ticket. They can be purchased in-store or online at this link.
All events are free unless otherwise noted and open to the public. You can keep up with our latest event news by looking at our events page.We don't require an RSVP, though we appreciate them from Facebook users! If you can't make it to an event, we are always happy to take an order via phone (718 383 0096) or email (orders@wordbrooklyn.com) for a signed book from an event. We're happy to ship books as well. |
Book Club
|
|
Our book club pick for January is The Group by Mary McCarthy. A classic read that often falls by the wayside, McCarthy's 1963 bestseller follows eight friends who graduate Vassar in 1933, through marriage, divorce, the Depression, and the frustration of being an educated woman in pre-feminist America. The rare novel that's as intellectual as it is gossipy (and a recent read for Betty Draper on Mad Men).
We'll meet to discuss The Group at 7:30pm on Wednesday, February 3 and at noon on Saturday, February 6; come to whichever meeting best suits your schedule. As always, the book will be 10% off all month.
