What's going on at WORD?
|
|
A little piece of Greenpoint in front of Borough Hall: WORD at the Brooklyn Book Festival, 9/13/09.
Here at WORD, we're a bit sad about the end of summer--after all, that means no more nerd basketball until next year. But we're buoyed by the beautiful fall weather, and more importantly, by this fall's bumper crop of fiction. You've heard us talk about it before but let's just go over some October new releases one more time. You've got Dave Eggers, apparently starting to go after Joyce Carol Oates' record of prolificacy, with another novel just out, The Wild Things. A. S. Byatt returns with The Children's Book, Jonathan Lethem gives Manhattan the Motherless Brooklyn treatment with Chronic City, and, believe it or not, a new collection of early short stories from Kurt Vonnegut, Look At The Birdie. It's not just literary fiction, though. Take a look at some of the great children's books that have come out or are coming out in the next few weeks! On the picture book side, we're excited about Princess Hyacinth: The Girl Who Floated and Alphabeasties. The delightful Libba Bray has a new YA book that is just the right amount of bizarro (that is to say, a LOT of bizarro): Going Bovine. Libba will be here 11/5, so get ready! And we'd be remiss not to mention the book that drives children all over Greenpoint into frenzies of anticipation even when all they have is the bookmark. That would, of course, be the Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days. Don't forget! You can pre-order and pre-pay for any new release and get 10% off (plus, you'll have the comfort of knowing your new book will be waiting there behind the counter for you on its release day). You can do it up until a week before release, so many of the books in this email are still eligible for the discount! Just drop by, call, or email. You've been reading this newsletter long enough to know that we're obsessed with cookbooks and, more importantly, the food they inspire. So of course we couldn't resist All Cakes Considered, possibly one of the best cookbooks of the year. Not only is it a great collection of cake recipes that were tried and tested on the folks who make All Things Considered, it's also a great cookbook if you've never tried baking a cake before. Melissa Grey, NPR's Cake Lady, starts with easy cakes and teaches just one or two new techniques at a time. You'll start with The Man Catcher (a sour cream pound cake) and by the end, you'll be ready for Stephen Pyles's Heaven and Hell Cake: The Liberace of Layer Cakes. Just promise us that if YOU decide to make a cake a week for a year, you'll remember the bookstore who told you about it! And, finally: we've got a contest all you writers should sharpen your pencils for. On November 18th, during IBNYC's Indie Bookstore Week, we'll be doing an
event to celebrate the paperback release of State by State, a wonderful
collection of essays from acclaimed writers, about the states they
love. We'll be hosting a contest in the same spirit - called
Neighborhood by Neighborhood! Write an essay about your favorite part
of NYC: from Washington Heights to Vinegar Hill to of course, Greenpoint. Send
submissions to info@wordbrooklyn.com
by November 6th to be entered. Winner gets an autographed copy of the book,
a gift certificate to WORD and might even get to read their piece at our event on the
18th. That's for next month, though--what about October? Which great authors are visiting? What book will the book club read? What great discount can you get just for reading this email? Read on before your curiosity kills you. |

It's fall, when a book lover's thoughts turn to dinner parties, travel writing, and...erotica?
Thursday, October 1, 7:30 pm:
Mike Edison's Second Annual Banned Book Party!
Join Mike Edison, plus special guests Richard Nash and Lizzie Skurnick
for an evening celebrating books that, through audacity of thought or
language, have somehow put a burr in the saddle of the status quo!
Edison will read about how to write a pornographic novel from his book
I Have Fun Everywhere I Go and then lead a conversation with Nash
(Cursor) and Skurnick (Shelf Discovery: The Teen Classics We Never Stopped Reading) hitting topics such as contemporary obscenity trials,
community standards, YA/teen lit plus much more! Discussion to be
followed by the "Name That Banned Book Contest" - including music and
readings from classic banned and challenged books. Facebook RSVP here.
Sunday, October 11, 6:00 pm:
Forking Fantastic! Put the Party Back in Dinner Party
Join authors - and cooking kitchen goddesses - Zora O'Neill and Tamara Reynolds for
a dinner party celebrating the release of their new festive collection
of 50 crowd-pleasing recipes, Forking Fantastic! Join us for a special Columbus Day
Weekend Sunday Night Dinner (SND) right in the basement at WORD! We'll
commemorate the untimely death of American explorer Meriwether Lewis,
at the tender age of 35...apparently by his own hand! We guess that once
you traipse across the breadth of brand-new America and eat some
Pacific Northwest salmon and berries, you figure life can only get
worse? No pressure, but bring a dish to this potluck dinner that might
convince Captain Meriwether not to end it all-maybe something that
reflects the breadth of America today?! Room temperature is best. Facebook RSVP here.
Thursday, October 15, 7:30 pm
YA NOT?: When You Reach Me
Our next YA NOT? event will feature author Rebecca Stead in conversation with her publisher Wendy Lamb. We are big fans of this book at WORD! When You Reach Me is
"clever and fantastic," "shimmering and funny, mysterious and
timeless." The YA NOT? series seeks to bring YA writers, editors,
librarians, teachers, and other not-so-young adults who love teen
fiction all together to talk about fantastic YA books, why we love
them, and how we can spread the WORD about them as far as possible.
(Teens welcome too, of course!) Facebook RSVP here.
Thursday, October 22, 7:30 pm

The Busiest Street in Town
**EVENT FOR KIDS!!**
Mara Rockliff
visits NYC to read her new picture book about slowing down, The Busiest Street in Town! Rushmore
Boulevard is the busiest street in town-until Agatha May Walker decides
to do something about it. Armed with a batch of Sweet and Spicy ginger
snaps, a wingback chair, a card table, and a Parcheesi set, Agatha and
her best friend take to the street to reclaim it from the noisy cars,
motorcycles, and giant trucks that rumble by all day long. The book is
appropriate for children 4-8 but kids of all ages are invited to join
us for this Sunday afternoon storytime event! Facebook RSVP here.
Wednesday, October 28, 7:30 pm
All Hopped Up and Ready to Go: Music from the Streets of New York 1927-77
 Author Tony Fletcher
will talk about his new book, All Hopped Up and Ready to Go, a penetrating and entertaining
exploration of New York's music scene from Cubop through folk, punk,
and hip-hop. Joining him for a conversation about NY music history is Dusty Wright from Culture Catch. Facebook RSVP here.
Thursday, October 29, 7:30 pm
Guidebook Writers Tell All: The Glamour and The Slogging!
Join us for a discussion with three Rough Guides travel writers: Zora O'Neil (Cancun & Cozumel DIRECTIONS, Mexico), AnneLise Sorenson (Belize) and Sarah Hull (Boston, New England). Panelists will each speak
about how he/she came to write guides, and what's been most surprising,
frustrating, and rewarding about the actual experience of guidebook
writing. Each guest will also share travel tips about their regions of
expertise. Get strategies for guidebook writing and insider info on the
best places to go. Facebook RSVP here.

All events are FREE and open to the public. If you can't make it to an event, we are always happy to take an order via phone (718 383 0096) or email (orders@wordbrooklyn.com) for a signed book from an event. We're happy to ship books as well.

Book Club
|
|
Our book club pick for October is An American Childhood, by Annie Dillard. This isn't just one of the best memoirs ever written, it's one of the best books written about the 20th century US. Dillard's ability to write about our history by writing about herself is uncanny; you don't have to have been raised in Pittsburgh in the 1950s to find parts of this book that sing to you like they were written for your eyes alone. As far as I can tell, the biggest problem with this book is that it's hard to find another book that can compare with it after you've turned the last page.
We'll talk about An American Childhood at 7:30pm on Wednesday, November 4, and at noon on Saturday, November 7. The book will be 10% off all month. Remember, you don't need to have come before to be a part of our book club! Just read the book and show up at a meeting time. We're always happy to see new people!

The Last WORD
|
|
Welcome to the newest section of the WORD email newsletter: special discounts and offers just for the folks who read all the way to the bottom of our email!
This month: Catching Fire! Have you heard about The Hunger Games? We love this series here at WORD. We love it so much that we fought over who would get to read Catching Fire (the second book) first. This is a book for teens--and boy, do they love it--but it's also a book that adults devour. The plot? Teens fight to the death on an island while everybody else watches them on TV. Yep, it's just as Running Man as it sounds. At least three customers have bought The Hunger Games one day and literally come back for Catching Fire the next.
And all this month, you can get 20% off a copy of Catching Fire! Just mention The Last WORD discount at the register and indulge your bloodthirsty need to read about kids living off of coconuts and dodge machetes. Team Peeta or Team Gale?
Also, until we run out, we have mockingjay pins and mockingjay stickers! Which will make you very excited once you've read the book...
