What's going on at WORD?
|
|
Hit Factorie hangs out in the window they made for WORD! Saturday, June 27, 2009. Photo credit: Brock Shorno.
What's with the crazy mannequins in our window? We didn't think anything could top having original art in the window to
promote the new book Gig Posters, as we did most of June, but Hit Factorie has pulled it off. They're visiting us courtesy of Hit Factorie, a local art collective that meets regularly to, without the help of computers, make an entire handmade book in a day! They made their latest book, this one with the theme of "summer reading," last weekend in our basement, and paper-mached pages from it to the glorious mannequins. As a special treat, the mannequins are also covered in literary tattoos. Can you name them all? Stop by and see if you can---and read on to find out about the event that Hit Factorie and the G-Train Salon are having in our basement later in the month! We've been having a great summer so far, and hope you have as well. Despite the weather, our June events had fantastic turnout. Our party for Kate Christensen and her latest book Trouble was standing-room only, and when Sarah Magid brought her treats to celebrate the release of her cookbook Organic and Chic, everyone was so impressed that we sold every copy of it in the store! We also had great book launches for Emily St. John Mandel's debut novel, Last Night in Montreal, and for Jancee Dunn's hilarious Why Is My Mother Getting a Tattoo?: and Other Questions I Wish I Never Had to Ask. Thank you so much for your support of these and all of our featured authors. This month you'll have many more opportunities to meet authors and drink wine; scroll down to the events section to learn more. Here in the store, we've been biting back our jealousy at all the travel books we've been selling. Seems like Berlin and Italy are the hot places for Greenpoint residents this summer! But we suspect even more of you are like us and won't be able to go too far for too long. May we suggest a recent arrival at the store? The new TRIPS series from Lonely Planet includes a great guide for we NYC residents that includes fifty trips--day, weekend, and week-long--to places all over the mid-Atlantic area. Many are clearly marked family-friendly and/or pet-friendly, so there's something for everyone. If you're looking for something between a staycation and a vacation, this book is a great place to start. It'll be easy to find on the front table all month! But whether you're traveling or not, you'll need something to read this summer. We've made it easy for you--we'll have a nice rotating display of great summer reads right by the counter all summer long. Whether you're reading Infinite Jest as part of Infinite Summer, becoming obsessed with Sookie Stackhouse like certain bookstore employees we won't name, or just need a solid read to make you forget the humidity, we've got you covered. One more thing for the single fans of WORD--we're setting up a match-making bulletin board that will be unveiled this month. The premise is simple. List your favorite books and the one you can't stand. Others will do the same. Make a love connection through literary taste! One more service we're happy to provide here at WORD, as long as you promise any marriages that come out of it will be registered exclusively here. Keep an eye on our blog for more information! |
This month at WORD
|
|
Thursday, July 9, 7:30 pm: Indie Press Night with Seven Stories Press: Douglas Martin, author of new novel Once You Go Back and Lee Stringer, author of the memoir Sleepaway School. Martin and Stringer will read from their respective work and discuss
its common source-childhoods that run off the rails, exposing kids to
forces that can equally destroy and nourish a young, creative life-as
well as the process, the struggle, and the redemptive power of
autobiographically-charged writing. Phong Bui, publisher of The Brooklyn Rail, will moderate.
Sunday, July 12, noon: Basketball, Brunch & Books:
Come out and watch our basketball team and/or join us in the store afterwards for a brunch reading with Dave Reidy, author of the new short story collection, Captive Audience.
Dave will read his short story "Postgame," about the retirement and
fast-following fatherhood of a scrappy NBA guard named Tim Vilinski.
The WORD basketball teams play from approximately 10:30am to noon at American
Playground, across Milton Street from WORD. The event will take place immediately following in the (air-conditioned) store. Brunch goodies will be served.
Sunday, July 19, 6:30 pm: Derek McCormack: The Show That Smells reading with Derek McCormack and guest Rakesh Satyal.
Derek will read from his second selection in Dennis Cooper's Little
House on the Bowery Fiction Series, "...a thrilling tale of hillbillies,
high fashion and horror." Rakesh will read from his coming-of-age debut
novel Blue Boy, which charts an Indian-American boy's transformation from mere mortal to Krishnaji, the blue-skinned Hindu deity. Moderated by Akashic Press.
Tuesday, July 21, 7:30 pm: Hot and Wicked Botanical Book Night! Join us for readings and conversation with two plant goddesses: Margot Berwin will read from her mystical debut novel, Hothouse Flower and the Nine Plants of Desire; and Amy Stewart will read from her latest, Wicked Plants: The Weed That Killed Lincoln's Mother and Other Botanical Atrocities, her new book that is also the inspiration for an exhibit currently at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.
As Amy explains on her website, the evening at WORD will be "An
extraordinary event like no other. Seriously." Algonquin editor Andra Miller, will moderate a discussion with the authors.
Thursday, July 23, 7 pm: G Train Salon Reception for Hit Factorie Installation! WORD will host a reception for our summer window art installation,
created by Brooklyn-based group Hit Factorie. The evening will include
a hands-on collaborative workshop to make an original Hit Book-inspired
piece! More information on this event will be forthcoming on our blog. Learn more about the G Train Salon here and learn more about Hit Factorie here. But really, you don't need any more inspiration to come than to see the fantastic window, so come by and check it out!
Thursday, July 30, 7:30 pm: YA NOT? A literary salon for not-so-young adults:
Our next YA Not? event will feature a reading with Sheba Karim, author of Skunk Girl, "...a rare exploration of Muslim culture and ... welcome addition to teen collections." She will be interviewed by Abeer Hoque.
The YA NOT? series seeks to bring YA writers, editors, librarians,
teachers, and other not-so-young adults who love teen fiction all
together to talk about fantastic YA books, why we love them, and how we
can spread them as far as possible. (Teens welcome too, of course!)
All events are FREE and open to the public. You can learn more about these events and events for the rest of the summer on our events page. Hope to see you soon! If you can't make it to an event, we are always happy to take an order via phone (718 383 0096) or email (orders@wordbrooklyn.com) for a signed book from an event, and we're happy to ship books as well. |
Book Club
|
|
Our book club pick for August is Miss Lonelyhearts & the Day of the Locust, one volume containing two novellas by Nathanael West. Though West was not well-appreciated as a writer during his time, both
books are now regarded as classics. They are spot-on depictions of
Depression-era struggles---MISS LONELYHEARTS
is set in a newspaper office and LOCUST is set in Hollywood---but show
a very different side of America during that time than the novels of
Steinbeck and other writers who chronicled rural poverty. Though his writing can be cynical, there's also a great deal of dark humor to smooth over the right spots. The
novellas can be discussed independently of each other, but they'll
both gain a lot if we read and discuss both together. However, we did choose this book so that book club members can make time for the book and still have their summer plans, so even if you only read one, you'll still be set for book club!
The book is in stock and as always,
will be 10% off all month. We'll discuss it Saturday, August 1 at noon and Wednesday, August 5 at 7:30pm. See you then!
