What's going on at WORD?
|
|
The 451s (in black) battle it out with Mrs. Balloway (in red) with some assistance from members of Spaulding's Greys. American Playground, Sunday, May 24.
Well, the basketball league has had a great pre-season! If you want to keep an eye on them, in addition to occasional blog posts on the WORD blog, you can also join the basketball league Facebook group. What else have we been up to? Well, on the Internet, you can find our recommendations for great Greenpoint businesses on the blog of the Independent Booksellers of New York City. We were also *blush* named Indie Heartthrobs by Bookslut, so if you've ever found yourself wondering about the backstory to WORD, check out that interview! And we're trying to get better about updating the staff picks page regularly for those of you who can't visit the store to see them in person--check out two new ones for The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway and Brooklyn by Colm Toibin here. And speaking of WORD on the internet, do you use Goodreads? If you do, you can connect with other WORD fans here in our group for the WORD book club. In the store, we've been getting ready for several fantastic events that you can read about below. One event will feature free baked goods and another has free sangria sorbet, so definitely check them out! We've also arranged for our book club to meet with the author of the book that they're reading ( The Ten-Cent Plague), so make sure you read to the bottom of the email for that information. And as always, we're getting in new books that we're really excited about. In addition to the great books we're hosting events for and reading for book club, here are a couple recent paperback releases we were psyched to see when the UPS guy showed up: The Writing Class, by Jincy Willett. Another dark comedy from an American master of dark comedy, and this one has a great murder mystery woven within. This is a great novel for summer traveling and especially great for writers and those who teach writing. The Plague of Doves, by Louise Erdrich. When it comes to grand family sagas in which you bother to keep track of every character because you genuinely like every one, it doesn't get much better than Louise Erdrich. By turns funny and sad, and beautifully human throughout. This is a book to lose yourself in. |

Launch party for Jancee Dunn's latest memoir Why is My Mother Getting a Tattoo? And Other Questions I Wish I Never Had to Ask. With similar humor and spirit that infused her first memoir, But Enough About Me, Dunn turns to her evolving relationship, as a so-called adult, with her family.
All events are FREE and open to the public. You can learn more about these events and events for the rest of the summer on our events page. Hope to see you soon! If you can't make it to an event, we are always happy to take an order via phone (718 383 0096) or email ([email protected]) for a signed book from an event, and we're happy to ship books as well. |
Book Club

|
Our book club pick for July is The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic-Book Scare and How It Changed America. Now that comics are cool again, after a long period of being considered the exclusive dominion of capital-N Nerds, it's hard to believe that people used to believe they were one of the main causes of juvenile delinquency and the worst sort of poison to young minds. In this book, Hajdu looks at the church and government campaigns to rid the country of all but the blandest comics in the mid-50s, but he also lovingly details the comics that were attacked and the people who created them. A fascinating book full of the sort of characters who make American history so engrossing. And we're lucky enough that this month, David will join us when we discuss it!
As always, the book will be 10% off all
month. We'll discuss it on Wednesday, July 1st at 7:30 with David in attendance. (There won't be a Saturday meeting in July due to Independence Day.) See you there!
