What's going on at WORD?
|
|
For starters: BABY ONORATI HAS ARRIVED! Thanks to the magic of social networking, you might already know this (and if you don't--why aren't you our fan on Facebook, hmmmmm?) But just in case: it's a boy! Adrian Joseph arrived 12:43pm on April 2, 2009, weighing 7lbs, 13oz. Hooray!
April is National Poetry Month! Check out our events section to see what we have planned to celebrate, but in the meantime, check out Poems Out Loud, a fantastic website put together by independent publisher W. W. Norton and curated by former Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky.
The big shocker of the month: despite arriving in the last week of the month, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies managed to climb into the third spot on our monthly bestseller list! This book has been such a big hit at independent bookstores across the country that they had to rush to re-print it--but we are taking names for when it comes back in, hopefully as soon as next week. Let us know if you want a copy! And make sure you read to the bottom of the email to see what else WORD customers like yourself are reading.
We're welcoming spring in our own special way...
...we're sprouting our own leafy wonders. (We're also propping open the door a lot). Drop by to see them grow, they should turn into real plants soon enough.
And a thank you to everyone who wished us well on our second anniversary on March 14th!

This month at WORD
|
|
Thursday, April 9 at 7:30pm:
The first event of a new series at WORD: YA NOT? A literary salon for not-so-young adults. We begin with Terra Elan McVoy, author of Pure. Terra
and her editor, Anica Rissi, will have a conversation about the book,
YA fiction in general, and whatever else comes up! The night will
include a short reading, book signing, and cupcakes with cherries on
top.
Pure is the sort of book that you can love even when you're baffled by the content
and the characters--and it's a book that is incredibly relevant to both adults
and teenagers. A group of best friends
all make virginity pledges in middle school and wear purity rings as proof of
their promise and their faith. However,
the friends fall away from each other after they find out that one of the girls
has broken the pledge. Some of the
girls instantly shun her, but Tabitha, the protagonist, is torn.
This is one of the first YA books that has a teen protagonist who has a
serious and complex relationship with her Christian faith. It's not proselytizing and it's not
sarcastic; Pure has a pitch-perfect voice. Teachers and librarians, don't miss this debut YA novel and its fantastic author!
Tuesday, April 14 at 7:30pm:
We celebrate National Poetry Month with a release party for Rick Reid, author of to be hung from the ceiling by strings of varying length, the latest in the Black Goat poetry series, presented by Akashic Books.
Sunday, April 26 from 12 noon - 3 pm:
Our first Stationery Swap! We
know we're not the only folks that use half a box of stationery and
then get sick of it. Bring your extra cards and stationery to WORD and
trade with others - refresh and liven up your correspondence materials!
(If you can't make it but want to free up some room in your desk
drawers, just drop off your stationery beforehand.)

Wednesday, April 29 at 7:30pm:
We host our next Indie Press Night with Soft Skull Press. Reading and signing with authors Pasha Malla (The Withdrawal Method) and Zachary Mexico (China Underground).
Check out our events page
for more information, where you will notice that we actually have most
of our events for May and June scheduled already too. We'll remind you
about those again in the future - in the meantime, hope to see you
at the store sometime during April! |
Book Club
|
|
Our book club pick for May is A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, by Xiaolu Guo.This is a dual pick of new events coordinator Kelly and manager Stephanie. We both love Xiaolu Guo's writing and this, her first novel in English, is a stunning example of her captivating storytelling. Based on Guo's own time in London, the book starts in the simplest of English, to match her language level, but the language grows more complex as Z, the protagonist, becomes more comfortable with the language and the country. As always, the book will be 10% in-store all month.
The discussions are as follows:
Saturday, May 2nd, at noon Wednesday, May 6th, at 7:30pm
Hope to see you there!
