What's going on at WORD?

For starters:
we are laughing at this totally cute video for Amy Krouse Rosenthal's new children's book, Duck! Rabbit!

We're also oooing and ahhhhing over some great new arrivals, like:

--A new line of notebooks from Sweden called Whitelines.  These are great for writers, artists, and other creative folk.  They're also a must-have for notebook freaks (most commonly defined as a person who continually breaks promises to him or herself not to buy more notebooks).
Scott Pilgrim 5 cover
--Scott Pilgrim Vs. The Universe, by Bryan Lee O'Malley, the fifth installment in the fantastic sort-of-manga, sort-of-a-comic, 100%-awesome Scott Pilgrim series.

--Little Bee, by Chris Cleave.  Even this early in the year we can tell Little Bee coverthis is going to be one of our favorite books of 2009.  This story of the many long-term changes wrought by increased globalization is told to perfection by two alternating viewpoints that are from two different worlds.  Definitely worth a hardcover purchase.  Read some great reviews; we're far from alone in loving this book.

--Bananagrams.  Have you played Bananagrams?  If so, you are probably saying out loud to yourself, "O my god, I LOVE Bananagrams!" If not, you should come by and pick it up so you can understand why people love it.  It's like Scrabble, but you have your own board and it goes very quickly.  Great for presents.

And most crucially, we're starting a basketball league.

Have you spent your entire life feeling really weird because you like both books and basketball?

Well, luckily for you, WORD feels your pain and wants to make it all better.

We're starting a summer basketball league.  Not quite sure what format, yet--that'll be determined by how many people join up.  But we've got American Playground across Franklin Street and we are determined to use it.  Both men and women are welcome.  The league will play from May to August, and we'll do our best to work with everybody's schedules.

One catch: this league is for book lovers only.  In order to participate, email the answers to the following five questions to [email protected]:

1. Who wrote Ulysses?
2. What is the best selling book of all time?
3. What is J. D. Salinger's most well-known book?
4. Name a book that has been banned in the United States in the last 100 years.
5. What is your favorite book?

Send the answers along with your name and you'll be signed up!  And please forward to the other basketball and book-loving freaks you know.

Mission to America coverOur book club pick for April is Mission to America, by Walter Kirn.  This novel is the story of two young men who have been raised in a remote and quiet religious cult in Montana and their trip to the rest of the country to find more people to join their community.  As they succumb to the many temptations of modern America, they get entangled in the dramas of a strange group that includes a former porn star and a crazed billionaire.  It's a satire, but an incredibly warm-hearted one with just a little bit of bite.  And the cult is so well-crafted and interesting that I will admit, I really found myself wishing I could run away and join it.

As always, the book will be 10% in-store all month.

The discussions are as follows:

Wednesday, April 1st, at 7:30pm
Saturday, April 4th, at noon

Hope to see you there!
