Labels Are For Jars Holiday Gift Campaign

Labels Are For Jars, which raises money to help fund Cor Unum, has launched its 2009 holiday gift campaign.  In addition to Labels' original lines of shirts and caps, the centerpiece of this year's holiday campaign is Labels' new line of "Hit for Hunger" shirts. Red Sox stars Dustin Pedroia, Mike Lowell, Jonathan Papelbon, Josh Beckett, and David Ortiz are the Labels Are For Jars "Hit for Hunger" team.  "Hit for Hunger" shirts are available with each player's name and number, as well as the "Hit for Hunger" and Labels Are For Jars logos.  Shirts are available in red and blue, sizes S, M, L, XL, and XXL.  The shirts are packaged in clear plastic jars, in which people collect money to help fund Cor Unum.  All Labels gear is sold online at labelsareforjars.org for $20, plus S&H.  One hundred percent of the profits from the sale of Labels gear is donated to Cor Unum. Spirit of Sharing
Lawrence is the economically poorest city in Massachusetts, with approximately one third of its citizens living below the poverty line - including nearly 40 percent of children and a quarter of the community's senior citizens.  It has the highest unemployment rate in the state(18.2%) -- nearly double the state's average.  Lawrence's need has deepened during the recession. It seems hard to believe, but it's true, that economic poverty makes it impossible for hundreds of families in Lawrence to provide Christmas presents and warm clothing for their children. Spirit of Sharing is a beautiful opportunity for us to help make Christmas a much brighter experience for these families. We are in need of toys and new, warm clothing (coats, hats, gloves) to share with these families.  If you are able to help provide a toy or new items of clothing, please drop them off at the Cor Unum Meal Center by 21 December or you can make a secure on-line donation towards the purchase of these items by clicking the Spirit of Sharing link below:

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
With the economy in the tank, we have been busier than ever at the Cor Unum Meal Center.  During the past year, Cor Unum served over 185,000 meals to hungry people in Lawrence.  In the face of so many economic difficulties, what an extraordinary blessing is it that no one in our community has to be hungry!  Please consider joining the Cor Unum team as a volunteer.  Our most pressing volunteer needs are cooks, food prep, cleaning and administrative. Comments and stories from guests and volunteers

At Cor Unum, we serve each week hundreds of children who may otherwise go without meals. Many of our families rely on school breakfast and lunch programs to feed their children. After the children go home from school, they may not have another meal until they go back to school. It is extremely difficult for our families on weekends, holidays, and during other times when schools are closed. At Cor Unum, we are happy to be able to provide abundant, nutritious meals for these children and families.

We asked some of our families about their experience at the Cor Unum Meal Center. The following is just one of the comments from a Cor Unum family:

"Because Cor Unum is like a restaurant we are able to tell our children we are going out to eat and they do not realize we are poor, they think they are eating out just like the other children in their school"

With your continuing support, we will be able to provide thousands of men, women, and children in Lawrence who deserve full nourishment good, healthy meals. Thank you to all who are making possible our overcoming hunger in Lawrence through the Cor Unum Meal Center!
