 OVER 430,000 MEALS SERVED

Friends and Partners,

The expansion of service at the Cor Unum Meal Center has been amazing! When we opened Cor Unum on September 30, 2006, we started serving dinner three nights a week. In a short time, we expanded to seven nights of dinner service. By the spring of 2007, we began serving breakfast two days a week, and by that summer we expanded to seven days of breakfast service. On September 27, 2007, we reached the milestone of having served 100,000 meals. By our second anniversary in 2008, we had served over 265,000 meals. As of August 2009, we have served over 430,000 meals at Cor Unum! With the current economic downturn, we are experiencing an increase in our number of guests, with the largest increase among families with children and children unaccompanied by adults. We estimate that we will serve over 200,000 meals during the next year! With your continuing support, we will be able to provide thousands of men, women, and children in Lawrence who deserve full nourishment good, healthy meals. Thank you to all who are making possible our overcoming hunger in Lawrence through the Cor Unum Meal Center!

Cor Unum Welcomes the Red Sox Wives

During August, we were happy to welcome to Cor Unum a group of Red Sox wives, who helped served dinner. It was an exciting evening for both the guests and volunteers.  To read an article about it, click here. To see some pictures, click here.

Comments and stories from guests and volunteers
At Cor Unum, we serve each week hundreds of guests through the efforts of a close group of core staff and many dedicated volunteers. Beyond greeting guests and serving meals, our volunteers develop deeper connection with one another, with guests, and with their faith. Volunteers and guests together make up the Cor Unum community. We have asked some of our volunteers and guests about their experience at the Cor Unum Meal Center. A frequent volunteer feels a strong connection to Cor Unum, saying:

"People come for more than the food.  There's a sense of peace.  We develop relationships.  It's like a family . . . . We feel it's a privilege."

A long-time guest describes his perspective:

"Well, I'm homeless . . . so I come here for a meal and the conversations around the table. It's really comfortable here . . . .The best people volunteer."

A more recent member of the volunteer group remarked:

"Our first night we served over 501 guests who stood in the pouring rain and still came in with smiles on their faces, so appreciative of being served a hot meal. It really opened my eyes to how real the problem of hunger is in my community, and gave me a true appreciation of the great service Cor Unum provides."
