The expansion of service at the Cor Unum Meal center has been amazing. When we opened Cor Unum on September 30, 2006, we started serving dinner three nights a week. In a short time, we expanded to seven nights of dinner service. By the spring of 2007, we began serving breakfast two days a week, and by that summer we expanded to seven days of breakfast service. On September 27, 2007, we reached the milestone of having served 100,000 meals. By our second anniversary, we had served over 265,000 meals. As of November 30, 2008, we have served over 300,000 meals at Cor Unum! With the current economic downturn, we are experiencing an increase in our number of guests, with the largest increase among families with children and children unaccompanied by adults. We estimate that we will serve over 200,000 meals during the next year! With your continuing support, we will be able to provide thousands of men, women, and children in Lawrence who deserve full nourishment good, healthy meals. Thank you to all who are making possible our overcoming hunger in Lawrence through the Cor Unum Meal Center!

Comments and stories from the guests we serve.
At Cor Unum, we serve each week hundreds of children who may otherwise go without meals. Many of our families rely on school breakfast and lunch programs to feed their children. After the children go home from school, they may not have another meal until they go back to school. It is extremely difficult for our families on weekends and during times when schools are closed. At Cor Unum, we are happy to be able to provide abundant, nutritious meals for these children and families.
We asked some of our children about their experience at the Cor Unum Meal Center. The following is just one of the comments from our Cor Unum kids: "My experience at Cor Unum has been a great one. All the volunteers are nice and kind to you. The food is the best around. Best of all it's not like a meal center, it's like a fancy restaurant."

THE THANKSGIVING THAT ALMOST WASN'T
|
|
We almost lost our Thanksgiving dinner when our walk-in refrigerator, filled with Thanksgiving dinner and thousands of pounds of food, broke the night before Thanksgiving. Thanks to the refrigeration truck that was given to Cor Unum by a Labels Are For Jars donor, we were able to save Thanksgiving dinner and feed our many guests. The truck, sporting a "Slacker" label, was parked outside the Cor Unum kitchen. All the food was relocated into it, and the refrigeration unit was plugged into Cor Unum's electrical source!

Volunteer Corner |
Volunteers are the reason that we are able to serve so many people in need, and we are very thankful that so many people have come forward to share their time and talent with our guests. As a regular feature of our newsletter, we will highlight volunteers, groups, and families who are working to make a difference in the lives of our guests.
Family volunteering has become very popular at Cor Unum. It provides a venue through which parents may actively demonstrate to their children important values of helping others in need and the consequences of giving and sharing time and talent with the community. Most importantly, family volunteering provides opportunities for children to become involved in service at an early age, which most often translates into life-long volunteering.
