The much anticipated first leave weekend is fast approaching! I know many of you are anxious to see your son again and I am sure he is ready to return to you for some good home cooking and his own bed. During leaves we would appreciate your ongoing help throughout the year in maintaining your son's conduct as a representative of the Academy. As noted in the Cadet Regulation Handbook, "The Cadet Corps represents the Academy at all times." Any behavior during weekend leaves, day passes, vacation or athletic events should be in line with the policies and procedures of the Academy. Cadets should conduct themselves as gentlemen. If you are a new parent, we hope you will begin to see a change in how your son conducts himself with others and we strive for him to serve as example to other young men who are looking for a school such as Fork Union. We would like to share with you some very important information relating to the first leave. Please make note of it relating to times and dates. Upper School Cadets are each allowed one leave prior to Parents Weekend. A cadet has the option to choose from one of the following weekends listed below. Therefore, those with athletic obligations also have an option. September 26th to 28th or October 3rd to 5th Leave begins after class on Friday at 12:30 PM and ends at 7:30 PM on Sunday evening. Reminder: A "Leave Permission Form" must be on file in the Leave Office before leave will be granted. If you have not yet submitted one, they can be found in the download center of the website. This form states your desires for your son's leave status for the year. A new form is not needed for each leave; however, any changes to the form must be made in writing and faxed to (434) 842-4242. A young man going on leave with anyone other than his parents or guardians must have two things on file in the Leave Office: 1) Permission from his parents/guardians (the "Leave Permission Form"), and 2) a written invitation from the person with whom he will be going on leave. This information must reach the Leave Office prior to 4:00 PM on the Wednesday prior to the leave weekend. We hope you will take note of these important procedures and understand it is your son's obligation to adhere to the leave policies as noted in the Cadet Handbook and Parent Information guide. As you and your son plan for the available weekend leaves, you should remind him that he must maintain his eligibility for leave privileges by complying with cadet regulations (staying out of "demerit trouble"), and maintaining passing grades. This first leave will set the stage for the remainder of the year and your cooperation is strongly encouraged. As a reminder, Greyhound bus tickets will not be purchased through the Quartermaster this year (as posted on our website For Parents). Parents who wish to purchase a ticket for their cadet will have to call 1-800-231-2222 or go online to www.greyhound.com purchase a "will call for ticket." Your son will receive his phone privileges on September 20th. Once again this is another time to make arrangements for leave and remind him of his responsibilities in adhering to our policies. Thank you again for supporting the Academy in our efforts to build young men in Body, Mind and Spirit and do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Ivens at ivensb@fuma.org should you have any questions. Sincerely, Office of the Commandant
