25% of FUMA's Seniors Receive Full Academic Scholarships to College
Cadets Still Writing Success Stories in Academy's 110th Year
Fork Union, VA - May 30, 2008 -
The Class of 2008
at Fork Union Military Academy has set a new benchmark in academic achievement
at this venerable college prep institution. In a class of only ninety-seven
seniors, twenty-three students will be attending college on full academic
scholarships - and that's before one starts counting those students receiving
athletic scholarships. That's approximately twenty-five percent of the
Academy's senior class that will be attending college for free, due to their
outstanding academic performance.
In total, FUMA's
Class of 2008 received over $9.3 million in college scholarship grants. Fork
Union Military Academy's 2008 class of seniors included thirteen Honor
graduates, thirty-seven graduates with Academic Distinction, and twenty-six
members of the National Honor Society.
Seven cadets will
be attending one of our nation's service academies including the U. S. Military
Academy at West Point, the U. S. Air Force Academy, and the U. S. Naval
Academy. One cadet will be attending West Point Prep, and expects to continue
on to the U. S. Military Academy in the following years. These service
academies are known to be among the most difficult academic institutions to
enter, with high academic and physical standards. Fewer than ten percent of
applicants are selected for admission each year.
At least five
cadets have received prestigious full academic scholarships to the college of
their choice. At least ten cadets other will be attending colleges from
Virginia Tech to the University of Alaska in Anchorage on ROTC scholarships.
Sean Floyd, the
class Valedictorian, is the son of Alicia Freeman and John Floyd of
Fredericksburg, Virginia. Sean has attended FUMA for four years and graduates
with a grade point average of 4.600. He will attend Georgia Tech in the fall.
Sean is a recipient of the President's Scholarship, Georgia Tech's premier
merit-based award, offered annually to approximately 100 top students.
Brian Zitterkopf,
Salutatorian for 2008, is the son of Tim and Joan Platz of Pensacola, Florida.
Brian has attended FUMA for four years and accumulated a grade point average of
4.211. Brian will attend the U. S. Naval Academy, following in the footsteps of
his mother, a Navy pilot and alumnus of the Naval Academy.
Fork Union
Military Academy was founded 110 years ago to provide a college preparatory
education for students, and that mission is still being carried out today.
Using the unique One Subject Plan curriculum in its high school grades since
1950, the Academy is nationally-known for helping students excel to the best of
their ability by removing the distractions and influences present in so many
other schools today.
