Summer 2012
Inward Bound Newsletter

Hello!

Since the last newsletter, we've undergone some changes at the Sedona Meditation Training Company. First, we've change our name to the McLean Meditation Institute for Transformative Meditation Training (MMI for short.)

We've also added a new dimension to what we do. We now train meditation teachers! It all started when the New York Times called me to do a story on meditation, and then asked, "Where can people go to learn to meditate in New York and across the country if they can't get to Sedona?" Yes, there are some terrific teachers in the U.S., and yet, none that I could think of that transcended particular religious paths or offered a variety of techniques.

That's why I've developed the MMI Meditation Teacher Certification Program - to do just that. And anyone who enrolls in it will find how it truly deepens their meditation practice. Find out how you can become a meditation teacher here.

Feel free to share this issue of Inward Bound with your friends by using the link on the bottom of this newsletter. I hope to meditate with you sometime very soon!

The practice of mindfulness

Mindfulness is about fully being engaged  with your attention -  a gentle non-judgmental awareness - in the present moment, on purpose, to what you are doing as you are doing it. Being mindful is just what it sounds like.

Let your mind be full with what you are doing as you do it, all day long. This takes practice.

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing one's awareness back (from thoughts of the past or the future or distraction of any kind) into the present moment. It isn't that you want to forget about the past or future, it's more about bringing a balance to your awareness, so you spend most of your time where you actually are. Most people spend only a little time right here and right now.

This practice trains your brain to be where you are. It's a great place to be since this is the time and place where you
live your life. You're not breathing in the past or the future, you're breathing now. You don't feel sensations in your body in the past or future, you feel them now. Emotions too. And any spiritual connection is experienced in the present moment.  Future, past, they don't really exist except in your mind.

This moment is the only real thing. Tomorrow, or the next moment, will be experienced in what we call the here and now. When? Now. Where? Here.

Mindfulness can be practiced formally as a meditation, and can also be practiced while you are engaged in activity, at any time in almost any situation. You can be mindful of the sensations in your feet while walking or the feeling of warm soapy water on your hands while doing dishes. Simply notice all sensations while witnessing the mind's usual judgments and continual commentary. This helps the mind's ability to stay in the present moment.

Have you ever sat down to lunch only to talk about what will be happening for dinner?

Or, have you ever sat down to eat a meal and suddenly looked down and your food was gone, and you didn't remember eating the whole thing? Mindfulness is the opposite of mindlessness.

When you eat without awareness, you may in theory know you are eating, but your mind might be somewhere else. You might be thinking about other things or be watching TV, talking, or reading - or all of those. So a very small part of your awareness is absorbed with eating, and perhaps you are only barely aware of the physical sensations and even less aware of your thoughts and emotions. We can even miss the whole experience. And the same can be true for any activity we are engaged in.

Let's look at the practice of eating mindfully - you can do this at your next meal, or do it as you snack on a peach, a piece of chocolate, or even a raisin.  Kids love it!

Sit down and become purposefully aware of the process of eating. Deliberately notice the way your body is positioned, the sensations in your body, and the mind and body's responses to those sensations. Relax your body and breathe normally, don't hold your breath.

Hold the item in your hand and before you take your first bite and notice all the sensations: See the food, notice the texture, the shadow, the light, the color; as you hold the food, notice the temperature, the texture, the weight. Resist the urge to label anything, simply pay attention to what is really going on rather than your ideas or judgments about it.

As you mindfully bring the food up to your nose, be present for the aroma, and when you feel ready, take a small bite of food. Chew, but resist the urge to swallow right away. Really taste the food. Hear the food as you chew.Notice the texture in your mouth. You might notice the mind wandering, and when it does, without judgment, purposefully and gently bring your attention back to the mindful eating practice. Continue until you are finished and then sit quietly for a few minutes. Notice how you feel. What if you ate your meals in this fashion?

Studies have shown that people tend to eat more when they are given larger portions and are distracted.

Why would someone want to practice mindfulness?
  • You become more self-aware,
  • You trust yourself more and accept yourself more,
  • Your appreciation of life is enhanced,
  • You are able to be more serene in the face of difficulties
  • Your stress decreases along with a variety of stress-related physical symptoms, including chronic pain
  • There are significant decreases in anxiety and depression
  • Your clarity, concentration, and creativity improves,
  • Your immune system functioning is enhanced,
  • You are more accepting attitude toward life and its challenges.
Now who wouldn't want that?

A Soul-Centered Moment

From 1953 to 1981 a silver haired woman calling herself only "Peace Pilgrim" walked more than 25,000 miles on a personal pilgrimage for peace.

She vowed to "remain a wanderer until mankind has learned the way of peace, walking until given shelter and fasting until given food."

In the course of her 28 year pilgrimage she touched the hearts, minds, and lives of thousands of individuals all across North America. Her message was both simple and profound. It continues to inspire people all over the world.

"We people of the world need to find ways to get to know one another - for then we will recognize that our likenesses are so much greater than our differences, however great our differences may seem. Every cell, every human being, is of equal importance and has work to do in this world."
