Barbara Micucci Named School Counselor of the Year

Micucci, a school counselor at Caley Elementary School, King of Prussia, Pa., was nominated by her principal, Susan Silver, and selected from a field of extraordinary school counselors across the country representing all levels. Emotional Training Helps Kids Fight Depression

The academic schedule is tight, and the students' days are packed with rigorous academics, but Tom Brunzell, the dean of students, says it's important for these fifth-, sixth- and seventh-graders to take time out for "Emotional Health 101." Experts Warn of Exposing Kids to Haiti Coverage

As Arkansas elementary students try to grasp last week's Haitian disaster, school counselors say parents may be surprised by the impact it's had on kids. "They are very concerned about what they can do, whether this is happening in a local area, if it's going to happen to them," said Melissa Brown, Jefferson Elementary School counselor. "My three-year-old even told me, 'There's bad pictures in my eyes when I close them.' She didn't want to go to sleep." Read more.
School Districts Refresh Policies on Internet Safety,

Schools are balancing the benefits of the Internet with warnings on improper social networking and cyberbullying. The Green Bay School Board  in Wisconsin will consider an initial draft of the district's policy on cyberbullying, or harassment via the Internet. District officials also are drafting a policy that governs the use of Facebook, a popular social networking Web site. Read more.

School District Less Than Half Way to Diversity Goal

Halfway into the first year of Jefferson County Public Schools' new student-assignment plan, less than half of the district's elementary schools are in compliance with new diversity guidelines aimed at keeping schools integrated. According to statistics released by the district, 48 of the district's 90 elementary schools have failed to meet the diversity goal of having between 15 percent and 50 percent of students coming from neighborhoods where the average household income is below $41,000, the average education levels are less than a high school diploma with some college and the minority population is more than 48 percent.
