Teachers' Unions Balk at Florida's Bid for Federal Education Reform Money St. Petersburg Times Florida is suddenly in danger of stumbling in its quest for a share of $4.5 billion in federal education money aimed at school reform. Teachers' union officials called the state's bid "fatally flawed" and said there isn't a local union that can support it. That could mean trouble for Florida, which stands to lose up to $700 million in federal Race to the Top funds to improve teacher evaluations, tie teacher pay to student performance and turn around struggling schools. New York Teachers and Schools Sue Governor for Delaying Funds Reuters
New York schools, teachers, superintendents and other groups sued Gov. David Paterson, saying he had illegally and unconstitutionally withheld money the legislature approved for schools. The Democratic governor said New York's financial crisis required him to delay $750 million in payments to public schools and local governments. New York state would run out of cash this month if it paid all its bills, according to Patterson and the state comptroller. Read more. |

Recovery School District Looks at Making Charters Pay Rent The Times-Picayune The Recovery School District in Louisiana is seriously considering whether to charge its charter schools rent for use of their buildings, a move that district officials say would put the city more in line with many cities where charters pay for their facilities. "What we are doing now is not sustainable," said Ramsey Green, the district's director of operations, who said nearly half of his staff's time goes to handling the charter requests. Read more. |
