One If By Land...

National School Counseling Week 2010

It's never too early to start thinking about National School Counseling Week, which is Feb. 1-5, 2010. With as much as you have on your plate, if you don't start making plans early, the week will sneak up on you. Take a look at what some ASCA members have done in past years to promote the week or order your 2010 National School Counseling Week kit and get all the materials and plans developed for you. Order your kit by Jan. 22, 2010, for free shipping and to ensure it gets to you in time for National School Counseling Week.

Staying Safe Online: The Internet Keep Safe Coalition (iKeepSafe) worked with ASCA to develop Project PRO: Privacy and Reputation Online resources to students across the United States. These resources teach students the importance of creating and managing an online reputation. The Project PRO site contains videos for students illustrating the consequences of building a positive or negative digital reputation, as well as how to effectively handle cyberbullying. The site also contains additional resources like the MySpace tutorials for parents to encourage parents to communicate with their child about the potential impact of their digital reputation and utilize the latest technology available to observe and monitor their child's online activities and postings.

Character Education Grants: The Sprint Foundation offers grants to school districts and individual schools in support of resources that facilitate and encourage character education among K-12 students through programs that promote and/or address youth leadership, youth volunteerism, a positive school culture and drop-out prevention. Maximum award: $5,000 for individual schools, $25,000 for school districts. Deadline is Feb. 5, 2010. Learn more.

Photography Scholarship: Sigma Corp. of America, a world leader in photographic technology, has announced a first-ever scholarship for high school seniors aspiring to a degree or certificate in a photo-related field. High school seniors can submit their photos and an 800-word essay and compete to win a cash gift of $5,000 and $1,000 in Sigma products. Deadline is Feb. 10, 2010. Learn more.

Become a Military & Family Life Consultant: The MFLC Program is a Department of Defense program created in 2004 to address the need for support for service members and their families. MFLCs in DoDEA schools work in the school setting and directly with military kids but also with teachers and staff. MFLC school counselors are independent contractors. The contracted pay rate is $50/hour. Learn more.

Learn About College Financial Aid: Free National Training for Counselors and Mentors (NT4CM) training and support for counselors and mentors who help students and their families prepare financially for college will soon be in the D.C. area. NT4CM's professional trainers provide comprehensive, up-to-date information regarding federal and state student aid programs, scholarship searches and financial aid fraud. Learn how to access free resources to help your students and earn free continuing education units. Training is at The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law, Washington, D.C., on Friday, Jan. 8, starting at 9:30 a.m. Learn more (choose "NT4CM" under "Current and Upcoming Sessions").

Get a Virtual Tour: The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) invites you to take it's new guided tour. Learn more about the WWC and how to use our site and search features. The tour includes a step-by-step guide on how to search topic areas and interpret intervention reports, plus a detailed look at quick reviews and practice guides. The WWC is a central and trusted source of scientific evidence for what works in education.

Proton Energy Scholarship:  Global hydrogen energy leader Proton Energy Systems announced a $1 million scholarship program aimed at high school seniors. The scholarship recognizes seniors who demonstrate outstanding achievement, excellence and promise in the field of science or technology and who plan to pursue higher education in this field. The  program is supported and funded by Tom Sullivan, owner of Proton Energy and founder of Lumber Liquidators. The scholarship will award four-year undergraduate scholarship prizes with a total value of up to $100,000 each. Honorable mentions will be awarded $500 prizes. Learn more.
