Secretary of Education to Push Reform

Arne Duncan, secretary of education, plans to challenge educators, civil rights groups and others to put aside "tired arguments" about education reform to help him craft a sweeping reauthorization of federal legislation by early 2010. Read more.
Student-Developed Web Sites for Peers

Adam Sidialicherif has developed The Youth Voice, a Web site that enables teens to create their own profile page and acts as an online résumé and personal information site. Sidialicherif said, "It's a place where teenagers will find useful tips, tricks and products to get through the teen years successfully." Read more.
Educators Try to Improve Reading Scores

It's a mystery that has tugged at Florida educators for years. Based on Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test scores, elementary school students with excellent reading skills see their reading proficiency drop to mediocre by the end of middle school and plummet to abysmal in high school. That leaves school board members and educators puzzling over why students would suddenly forget how to read by the time they reach 10th grade. Read more.
Schools Allow Teens to Get a Jump on College

In recent years, local school districts have been working to increase dual-enrollment opportunities that allow students to take college courses and receive both college and high school credits for them. Last year, Bellefonte and Bald Eagle received state grants for $8,250 and $3,629, respectively, that covered almost all of the tuition and materials cost for students. Read more.
