National School Counseling Week 2010

It's never too early to start thinking about National School Counseling Week, which is Feb. 1-5, 2010. With as much as you have on your plate, if you don't start making plans early, the week will sneak up on you. Take a look at what some ASCA members have done in past years to promote the week or order your 2010 National School Counseling Week kit and get all the materials and plans developed for you.

Attention Journal Authors

Starting Jan. 1, 2010, Professional School Counseling journal will be moving to the sixth edition of the American Psychological Association Publication Manual. All manuscripts submitted after that date must comply with this new edition. This manual is in most libraries, major bookstores and online. See what's new in this edition.
Webinar: Educating for Sustainability

Join ASCA for a free webinar, "Educating for Sustainability in K-12 Schools," on Nov. 5, from 3-4:30 p.m. EST. Presenters will cover national trends, related research and more. The webinar is co-sponsored by the U.S. Partnership for Education and Sustainable Development, the Associaiton for Career and Technical Education, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the National Association of Secondary Principals. School Mental Health Professionals Survey: The National Community of Practice (CoP) on School Behavioral Health is working with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) to help develop a glossary of terms commonly used in our profession. Help with this public information campaign by completing the CoP/SAMHSA survey.

Apply for Typical or Troubled Grant: Typical or Troubled is a program to educate school personnel about mental disorders in teens. Grant applicants can apply to implement the program at their high schools. Applications are due Oct. 30. Learn more.

McDonalds Champion Kids: The U.S. McDonald's Champion KidsŪ program is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for 11-14 year-olds to compete for the chance to attend the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games as a McDonald's Champion Kid in February and serve as a youth correspondent. Learn more.

Free Drug Prevention Resources: The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) provides free resources for educators on its NIDA for Teens Web site. Resources include educational activities, teacher guides, quizzes, videos and games to teach students about drug abuse and addiction.

Free Bereavement Education Materials: When a family member, classmate or friend dies, a multitude of questions, emotions and concerns may arise for students and their families, as well as school counselors. Mommy's Light offers free bereavement education materials to assist school counselors in identifying and responding to the needs of bereaved students. Learn more.

Encouraging Students to Help Others: Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation introduces a new service-learning program, "Lemonade from Lemons." This program aims to teach Alex's inspiring message of making a difference, helping others and overcoming obstacles to school-aged children (K-5) through a children's book and service-learning lesson plans. Learn more.

Support Students Dealing with a Loved One's Cancer: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the PBS series "Arthur" and the Lance Armstrong Foundation are offering free materials to help schools support children when someone they know has cancer. Find free K-2 lesson plans and a family activity booklet online. A special episode of "Arthur," featuring Lance Armstrong and airing in mid-October, may be downloaded from iTunes for schools to use in the classroom.
