09 Conference

September 2009
2010 Conference

Last summer may seem like a distant memory, and next summer may seem light years away, but we're already hard at work pulling together an outstanding line up of speakers for the 2010 annual conference in Boston, July 3-6. Two of the speakers we've already lined up are Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabees," and Sylinda Gilchrist, author of "Choice Theory" and a highly rated speaker from last year's conference.

Make your plans now to attend. We're holding the line on registration fees, so you can come for the same price as last year. Online registration opens Jan. 2, 2010.

See you in Boston as we "Celebrate School Counseling" - and America's birthday.

Greetings!
Welcome to ASCA Aspects, published monthly by the American School Counselor Association, the school counseling division of the American Counseling Association. Each issue includes information about new projects, events, resources and more from ASCA and helps members take full advantage of all ASCA membership has to offer. We hope you enjoy these monthly newsletters; however, if you'd like to be removed from the mailing list, simply click on the "safe unsubscribe" link at the bottom of this e-mail.
See and be "SCENE"

As the new school year heads into full swing, school counselors across the country are taking advantage of the ASCA SCENE, our online professional networking site, to connect with other school counselors, share ideas and files, ask questions and more. In honor of back-to-school (and all the great resources available on the SCENE), we're holding a drawing each Friday in September to give away an iPod Shuffle and an ASCA insulated lunch bag. All you have to do to be entered to win, is register on the SCENE. If you're already registered, you're already entered.

Take a few moments and explore all the SCENE has to offer. Check out some of the discussions and recent announcements going on right now:

· Making presentations to teachers - what to cover

· Letting students know where you are/when you're available

· Manual restraint - are you trained? Should you be?

· 2009-2010 Education and Health Awareness Dates

And, have you seen the new TV show "Glee"? Richard Wong, executive director, shares his thougts on the portrayal of school counselors on this hot new show. See what he has to say in his latest blog on the SCENE, "A 'Glee'-ful Portrayal of School Counselors," and share your opinions.
National School Counseling Week 2010

It's never too early to start thinking about National School Counseling Week, which is Feb. 1-5, 2010. With as much as you have on your plate, if you don't start making plans early, the week will sneak up on you. Take a look at what some ASCA members have done in past years to promote the week or order your 2010 National School Counseling Week kit and get all the materials and plans developed for you.
Vote for New Board Members

The online election for new board members is open Oct. 19-Nov. 20. This is your chance to have a say in the future of ASCA and the school counseling profession. On Oct. 19, you'll receive an e-mail letting you know the election is open. Please take a few moments at that time to cast your vote for the following open board positions: president-elect, elementary level vice president, secondary level vice president, counselor educator vice president, North Atlantic regional vice president and Western regional vice president.
High-Tech or High-Trouble?

The November/December issue of ASCA School Counselor will focus on protecting kids from high-tech trouble and how school counselors are using technology in their jobs. We'd like your input into how you're using social networking and other technology in your jobs and how you're addressing high-tech dangers. Please take a few minutes to fill out our survey.
