RAMPed Up Schools

Planning to apply for the Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) designation? Check out the application guidelines online for changes
to the requirements and deadline dates. The next application deadline is Feb. 1, 2010. Those applying by Feb. 1 should use the current scoring rubric. After that date, applications will be due Oct. 15 of each year, and applicants should use the revised scoring rubric. Learn more.

Back-to-School Tips

Summer is already just a memory in many parts of the country as school starts back up again. Back-to-school season is the perfect time to educate parents and other stakeholders about what school counselors do and how you help students achieve. Check out the following resources, all of which you're welcome to use in your newsletters, on your Web site, at back-to-school night or via other communication vehicles.
  • Back-to-School Tips for Parents: Share these tips with parents for how they can connect with you for a successful year.
  • Articles for Parents: Do you publish a "Counselor's Corner" in your school newsletter? Feel free to use these articles.
  • The Role of the Professional School Counselor: Newly revised, this role statement is perfect for sharing with parents, school boards, administrators and other stakeholders.
  • Management Agreements: Start the year off on the right foot. Make sure you and your principal are both on the same page about your duties. See sample management agreements, job descriptions and evaluation forms in the online Resource Center.

Support Military Kids: MHN Government Services is seeking licensed clinicians to fill 10-plus week assignments for military and family life consultants (MFLC) for Department of Defense Education Activity schools. MFLCs work in school settings with miliatry kids, teachers and staff. Work week is 40 hours, during school hours and may include after-hours activities. MFLCs are independent contractors ($50/hour contract rate). Candidates must be licensed for independent practices and must have school counseling experience. Learn more or apply via e-mail.

Addressing Cancer: The award-winning children's show "Arthur" and the Lance Armstrong Foundation offer free resources to help school professionals and parents talk to kids about cancer. Find K-2 lessons and a Family Activity Booklet online this September. A special episode of Arthur, "The Great MacGrady," featuring Lance Armstrong, premieres the week of Oct. 19 on PBS.
