Beronia, Rioja (Spain) Reserva 2004 ($19, San Francisco Wine Exchange)
This delicious wine shows lovely Tempranillo fruit recalling red and black cherries, along with a faintly earthy undertone as well as a very nice edge of spicy oak.
Medium-bodied and very well balanced, this will continue to improve for another four or five years, and is very strong for the money.
90 - Michael Franz

Unique Wine Labels
Who hasn't judged a wine by its label? I think few of us can claim to have never purchased a bottle of wine just because the label caught our eye. With that in mind, we thought this week we'd pay tribute to some unique wine labels. Mar de FradesThis Spanish vineyard -- known for its crisp Albarino -- boasts "smart labels" that help you to drink the wine at the appropriate temperature. When the temperature of the wine drops below 32ºF, a small blue ship appears on the waves on the label (see left, bottom left).
In fact, in 2004, Time magazine listed the vineyard's label as one of the year's "Coolest Inventions." Maison M. ChapoutierSince 1996, Michael Chapoutier -- the seventh-generation head of this producer in northern Rhone -- has been printing all of his labels in Braille. One reason? Maurice Monier de La
Sizeranne, owner of the plot of the Hermitage, la Sizeranne, is also
the inventor of the first version of abbreviated Braille. The trademark pays tribute to this man. |
