Patz & Hall, Napa Valley (California) Chardonnay 2007 ($38)
This excellent Chardonnay shows deep flavors but also very good balance and integration.
Full-bodied at 14.2% alcohol, it nevertheless does not seem chunky or heavy, thanks to freshening acidity that lifts the finish.
There is notable aroma and flavor impact from oak, but it is very nicely tuned to the weight of the fruit, making this a fine Chardonnay for stand-alone sipping or for pairing with dishes like swordfish or scallops.
90 - Michael Franz

Fun (and Random) Wine Facts
This week, instead of a focused, educational column, we thought we'd give you some fun -- and, in some cases, random -- wine facts. - When did winemaking begin? The Mesopotamians were credited with producing the first wines in 6000 B.C.
- How many grapes does it take to make your average bottle of wine? It takes about 2.5 pounds of grapes -- usually 600 to 800
grapes -- to make a bottle of wine.
- How many varieties of wine grapes exist in the world today? Over 10,000!
- How many gallons of wine does California produce annually? Over 17 million gallons (Think about it... That's 17 million of the one-gallon containers of milk. That's a lot of wine!)
- How many calories are in a four ounce glass of red wine? Approximately 85
- How easy is it to find oak for wine barrels? While there are 400 oak species, only 20 of them are used in making oak barrels. And only 5% percent of an oak tree is suitable for making high grade wine barrels.
- How many bubbles are there in a bottle of champagne? According to scientist Bill Lembeck there are approximately 49 million bubbles in a bottle of Champagne. (We don't know if he's right or not.)
