Michael Franz head shot
Margan, Hunter Valley (New South Wales, Australia) Semillon "Masterpiece" 2006 ($15, Southern Starz)

Margan label

Given its name, this wine can't quite serve as an exemplar of modesty, but it comes pretty close to living up to its moniker with very expressive aromatics and flavors, which suggest figs, lime, dried herbs and freshly-mown hay.

Although these nuances are pretty impressive, its structural properties are at least as strong, with medium body and a fairly broad, weighty midpalate but very energetic acidity that lifts and defines the finish.

Fine Semillon is often wonderful with moderately robust foods, and indeed this wine was the runaway winner out of half a dozen wines tried with mussels in a green curry and coconut milk sauce.

Spring Beers
For beer drinkers, taking advantage of seasonal offerings is a must. And while spring isn't known as the strongest season for beer, there are still some good choices. So if you're looking for a good beer to bring to a spring barbecue, try seeking out one of these common spring releases ...
  • Maibock:  The Maibock is a lighter beer that showcases toasted or bready malt sweetness.
  • Red Ale: While red ales are brewed year-round, this malty ale takes on significance during spring as a St. Patrick's Day celebratory beer.
  • Dry Stout: This ale imparts light roasted characteristics and is the classic complement to oysters on the half shell.
  • Biere de Mars: This spring celebration beer hails from the beer producing regions covering Northern France and Southern Belgium. Some will also have more noticeable musty, or farmhouse, flavors due to wild yeast often used in the making of these styles.
... or check out our list (below) of 5 particularly stand-out domestic spring beers.

WWA's Weekly Top 5 List
Top 5 Domestic Spring Beers*
  1. Sierra Nevada ESB: A beautiful malt and spicy hop blend
  2. Victory Prima Pils: Pilsners go well with spring. Light gold color, and soft, fluffy carbonation. A beautifully citrus, hoppy and bubbly blend.
  3. Sam Adams White Ale: A White Ale that is precisely what a Belgian White should be. A slight hint of orange after an immediate malty taste.
  4. Dogfish Head Aprihop: A vibrant orange amber that tastes like a Magic Hat #9 on steroids. The intense apricot flavor balances out the hop spiciness.
  5. Ommegang Hennepin: A lemony-banana citrus blast, along with a small amount of hops, and a sweet yet subtle bouquet of malt and body.
