Michael Franz head shot
Santa Rita, Colchagua Valley (Chile) Carmenère "Pehuén" 2005 ($70, Palm Bay Imports)

Pehuen label

This impressively intense, deeply flavorful wine provides another nail in the coffin for the view that Carmenère is just a useful blending agent rather than a potentially great wine grape variety in its own right.

Packed with scents and flavors of sweet dark berries, it also shows accents of spicy oak, cocoa powder, and black licorice.

There's plenty of tannin to provide structure, but there's also so much sweet fruit that the balance works out very harmoniously.

Looking for something to do next Friday? Join the Washington Wine Academy for the 14th version of our Great Wines series!

WHEN: Friday, March 27, 7-11 p.m.
WHERE: Near the Courthouse Metro in Arlington, Virginia. (You have to register to get the address.)

PRICE OF ADMISSION: $12.50 + a bottle of wine (per person) to share. No payments at the door. You must register in advance.

INCLUDED IN THE COST: light appetizers and hourly door prize drawings to win wine themed items, wine accessories, and event tickets.

NOTES ABOUT WINES: To guarantee quality sampling for all guests, please ensure the value of your bottle meets the minimum value of $10 (no Barefoot or Charles Shaw)!

We challenge you to bring a bottle from a location or a varietal you have not sampled before. Never been out West? Then Pinot from Oregon or Chard from CA is cool. Never had Alvarinho? Seek it out! Got a bottle sitting in your rack from last year's winery tour? Leave it home... stuff you've already had doesn't cut it.

To ensure a broad spectrum, we suggest if your last name begins with the letters A-M bring a Red, N-Z bring a White. Confused? Bring a Rose.

We look forward to seeing you there as we continue our 8th year of Great Wines events.
