Marques de Casa Concha, Puente Alto (Chile) Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 ($20, Excelsior)
This wine, along with Santa Rita's 'Medalla Real' Cabernet (also from Chile's Maipo Valley), gets my vote for the world's best Cabernet at $20. It is so good that it should strike fear into the hearts of everyone trying to sell Cabernet for $50 these days--especially given the current economic climate.
Dark in color and very concentrated in both pigment and body, it features fruit notes that recall blackberry and black cherry, along with accent notes of cedar, cocoa powder and subtle spices.
There's plenty of tannin and a little oak to frame the fruit, but the sheer richness of the wine easily keeps the tannin from drying the finish.
93 - Michael Franz

Wine Deals -- and Events -- around D.C. AreaIf you're a big wine drinker, you're probably looking for the best wine deals -- and events -- around Washington. Maybe you know about 1/2 price wine night at a particular restaurant... or free Saturday tastings at a local wine store. For a great complete guide on Half-Price Wine Nights in Washington, make sure you check out Washingtonian magazine's latest list. (And for those of you who scoffed at our "Top 5" list of Twitter users last week, we heard about this article via Washingtonian's twitter account, @washingtonian.) Another great source -- other than the Washington Wine Academy -- for wine events in the area is On Tap magazine, which includes a monthly "On the Vine" feature that lists upcoming events. Where do you go to find out about upcoming wine events or wine deals in the D.C. area? Let us know by posting a message on our Facebook wall. |
