Innocent Bystander, Southeastern Australia (Australia) 2005 ($20, Old Bridge Cellars)
This delicious, reasonably priced red is a blend of 97% Shiraz and 3% Viognier.
Quite dark in color, it shows expressive notes of dark berries with accents of fresh flowers, spices, and toasty oak. The intense flavors never seem overbearing, and the oak and tannin, while notable, are not at all aggressive, as they are nicely tuned to the weight of the fruit.
90 - Michael Franz

Dave McIntyre's WineLine BlogLooking for some good wine reading? Then you don't want to miss Dave McIntyre's WineLine blog. Dave is a freelance wine and food writer and wine columnist for The Washington Post. Recent blog posts have included Dave's opinions of American syrahs, breakfast wines, dessert wines and reviews of various wines Dave is drinking. So why should you care what Dave has to say... besides his qualifications as a Post columnist?
Well, the Maryland & Washington, DC Beverage Journals said this about him: "McIntyre has steadily emerged over the past decade or so as one of the
top local wine journalists in the Maryland - D.C. area." Dave also has a website with information about his wine travels and links to his Washington Post columns. If you're looking to read up about wine, he's a great place to start. Who are your favorite wine bloggers? Post the answer to this question on our Facebook page and we may feature the blogger in an upcoming issue of the Weekly Vine. |

WWA's Top 3 Tips on Enjoying Wine in Tough Economic Times by Michael Franz
-
- Zig When They Zag: Looks for wines that are undervalued at present versus the "booming" varietals. (For more information on which these might be, read Michael's complete blog post on WineReviewOnline.com.)
- Think About the Economics of Your Wines--Including the Bottles: If that bottle you're about to buy is conspicuously large and heavy,
with thick glass and a deep punt and a raised crest on the shoulder
with a particular producer's seal, you can bet that it was something
like twice as costly as a simple, light bottle with a flat bottom. (Again, read Michael's blog entry for more on this theory.)
