Michael Franz head shot
Cycles Gladiator, California (United States) Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 ($10)

Cycles Gladiator label

Who says you can't get good wine from California for ten bucks? (Actually, I've said this myself not long ago after being angered by a dispiriting run of obvious, chunky wines, but this is an admirable exception.)

Distinguished by fruit that shows clear varietal character without any ripening flaws such as underripeness that can leave Cabernet showing a green side, or overripening that can leave it looking nondescript and grapey.

The finished wine is simple, as one would expect in this price range, but very tasty and versatile, with medium-plus body and pure flavors of dark berries that will work nicely with moderately robust foods.

VineyardFresh
VineyardFresh canWe've all done it... Drank a little bit more than we originally planned because we didn't want to see a good bottle of wine go to waste.

One solution: VineyardFresh.

VineyardFresh preserves open bottles of wine by stopping the process of oxidation. Using a gas mixture, predominantly of inert Argon gas, VineyardFresh preserves open wine for weeks (or even months) and protects your wine's aroma, flavor character, and quality. And it can be used with your favorite cognac, port, sherry, single-malt Scotch, sake, and even cooking wines and oils.

It's easy to use: Just spray the product into the bottle and recork. One canister can seal up to 50 bottles of wine for only $12.50.

VineyardFresh is lab tested, 100 percent pure and natural, and is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and harmless.

(P.S. If you're planning on attending this weekend's D.C. International Food & Wine Festival, VineyardFresh will have a booth so you can purchase it on-site.)

Top 5 Dessert or Ice Wines*
  1. Hogue Cellar's Late Harvest White Riesling 2005 (WA) $10: Oozes apricot and citrus flavors. Detailed balance of both acidity and residual sugars. Pair with apple pie or crisp, fruit torte, cheesecake and white chocolate-based desserts.
  2. St. Supery Moscato 2007 (CA) $23: Plenty of floral character on the nose, and the palate bursts with ripe peach. Pair with raspberry cheesecake or Crème Brulée.
  3. Inniskillin Vidal Icewine 2006 (Canada) $50-90: Producer of internationally acclaimed ice wines.
  4. Saracco Moscato d'Asti 2006 (Italy) $16: A semi-sparkling wine, or a "frizzante." Noteably sweeter and lighter in both taste and palate feel, with a lower alcohol content of around 8%. Oozes with ripe peach flavors surrounded by honeysuckle. A terrific apéritif or pair with cheesecake.
  5. Churchill's 10 Year Tawny Port (Portugal) $32: A brickish red color, with a sweet, nutty aroma. Delicious, rich display of well ripened sweet fig-like flavors and a caramel finish. Pair with cheesecake, tiramisu, chocolate truffles, or pecan pie. Also pairs well with cheddar cheese.
