Concha y Toro, Central Valley (Chile) Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah Casillero del Diablo "Reserva Privada" 2005 ($16, Excelsior)
This flagship release in the Casillero del Diablo line shows a darker, more deeply flavored profile than anything you will have experienced under this brand.
Comprised of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Syrah, it shows impressive density and expressiveness for a wine in this price range, with dark berry fruit that is effectively framed by spicy, smoky oak.

Wine & Candy
Once you put your little ones to bed, or while you're passing out candy to the kids in the neighborhood, don't forget a little treat for yourself. Here's some tips and hints on dessert wines that can complement your Halloween treats.
For Chocolate: Port is the most classic pairing option, but any red wine -- including Shiraz -- can accompany M&M's, cacndy bars, or other chocolate Halloween treats.
For Nutty Candy Bars: Try a Sherry or Madeira to complement the rich nut flavors.
For Caramel Apples: To match the caramel and butterscotch, try a Muscat or Gewürztraminer.
The acidity of white wines can stand up to the sweetness of
caramel. If you want to match the flavor of the apple, try ice wines, Sauternes or a late-harvest Sauvignon Blanc.
For Candy Corn: Chardonnay, Riesling, or Sauternes will pair well with the strong buttery, vanilla taste of a candy corn.
For your Fruity Treats, including lollipops and Jujubes: Pop open a dry or demi-sec style sparkling wine, like Prosecco or Champagne.

- Vampire Wines: The most obvious of Halloween wines. You can choose from seven different varietals. Under the Draculalinks label, they offer
Zinfandel and Syrah. The grapes for this wine used be grown in Transylvania, but the current vintage is made from California grapes.
- Casillero del Diablo: Casillero del Diablo means Cellar of the Devil. The vineyard's founder named his darkest cellar this to discourage workers from stealing his wines. It worked, and a legend was born.
- Zeller Schwarze Katz: While the black cat on the label may not be terribly spooky, the label can add a bit of kitsch to your Halloween spread.
- Toad Hollow Eye of the Toad: The name alone makes this wine perfect for Halloween festivities.
- Owen Roe Sinister Hand: The "spooky" label will remind you of goofy ghost stories from your youth.
- Leelanau Cellars Witches Brew: Difficult to find outside of Michigan, the winemakers say this wine is great on a cold night. Warm gently in the microwave for just a glass, or use as part of a "witches brew" by simmering it in a crock pot with a cinnamon stick.
- R Winery Evil Cabernet Sauvignon: The label might say "Evil"
upside-down and backwards, but this Cab from South Australia is
supposed to be quite nice to drink. If you'd prefer a white wine, check out the Pure Evil Chardonnay.
