Jordan, Stellenbosch (South Africa) Syrah 2005 ($20, Vinovative Imports)

Jordan Syrah 2005

The 2005 growing season in Stellenbosch was rather warm, providing a lot of ripeness in the finished wines, and this bottling is quite soft and immediate in its charms.

The dark berry fruit notes are soft and juicy, yet the wine never quite tips into obviousness on account of interesting backnotes of smoked meat and tobacco leaf.

News from the Washington Wine Academy
October 8, 2008

In August, we hosted our first wine & movie night at the E Street Cinema in Washington, D.C. In what was an obvious pairing, our wine tasting was accompanied by a viewing of the wine movie Bottle Shock.

The success of the event led to our newest regularly occurring event: First Wednesdays "Wine & Movie" Night at E Street Landmark Cinema.

Here's how it works: You purchase your tasting "ticket" for $16.50, entitling you to eight tastes of wine. Once at the movie theater, you purchase a ticket to a movie of your choice. It's that simple...

So come join us November 5 for our first First Wednesday! (Tastings start at 7:30 p.m. and run until 9:30 p.m.)

Beershake, anyone?
If you search online, you can find a variety of recipes where people cook using beer... Beer can chicken seems to be a favorite, as are beer-battered onion rings. But how about beer battered crepes? Or cheesecake that includes stout beer in its ingredient list? (You can find them online. I promise.)

To try one of the more unusual beer combinations, visit FineWine.com's Gaithersburg store and try the newest menu item: a beershake.

We admit, we were as wary as the next guy at the thought of a beershake. But with promises of its tasty nature, we tried it, and we have to admit...

This combination of Stone Smoked Porter, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate syrup, was really good! Don't believe us? Go try it for yourself. We think you'll become a convert.
