Cono Sur, Maipo Valley (Chile) Cabernet Sauvignon "Visión" 2006 ($14, Vineyard Brands)

Cono Sur Cab Sauv label

This is an admirably serious Cabernet at a pretty lighthearted price.

Gutsy and intense for a Chilean Cab in this price category, it shows full ripeness but still has a nice, subtle herbal aromatic edge and a dash of refreshing acidity for lift in the finish.

There's a little Merlot blended in, and the tannins are fine in grain but still sufficiently abundant to enable this to stand up to a steak.

News from the Washington Wine Academy
August 27, 2008

Recently, 36-year-old actress Christina Applegate announced that she underwent a double mastectomy after testing positive for breast cancer. Her diagnosis was a reminder that breast cancer can affect anyone regardless of age, health status, class, ethnicity...

So why is this celebrity health story the focus of our greeting this week?

Because we're hoping it will serve as another reminder as to why you should sign up and attend our September 5 "Uncork the Cure" fundraiser being spearheaded by Fox 5 anchor/reporter Holly Morris.

Don't miss out on this great opportunity to drink wine (provided by us), stare at waxy celebrities, and, most important, support a great cause.

Wine in a Box?!
If you've visited Virginia wineries, chances are you've seen the T-shirts encouraging people to "Drink Outside the Box." And if you're like us, the shirts made you laugh.

The truth is, many of us cringe when we see those boxes of wine sitting on the shelves. And with good reason. Historically, boxed wines have been known for questionable quality; however some in the industry are starting to embrace the concept of boxing wines.

Book author and wine blogger Tyler Colman recently authored a New York Times column about this topic, advocating a move toward boxing more wines. Why?
  1. Going green: Lighter packaging (boxes vs. bottles) will help vineyards reduce their carbon footprint (i.e., the amount of carbon dioxide emitted in the transportation of wine).

  2. Better shelf-life: An opened bottle will preserve wine for a few days. An opened box can preserve wine for about four weeks.

So where do we stand? If more vintners embrace the trend and start selling high-quality wines in boxes, well, then maybe we'll start drinking inside the box.
