Goldeneye, Anderson Valley (Mendocino County, California) Pinot Noir 2005 ($55)
This premium-priced Pinot is free of flaws, with nice sweet fruit that is well ripened without seeming overtly sweet. The wood notes are well tuned to the weight and intensity of the fruit, and the wine is clearly well made.
The issue here is complexity, and isn't clear that the wine has enough dimension or intricacy to justify its price, though it may gain complexity with time in bottle. 86 - Michael Franz

White = Cold and Red = Warm... Right?
Ever wonder what exactly people mean when they say you should serve white wine chilled and red wine at room temperature? Here are some easy-to-remember and easy-to-follow guidelines:
For white and rosé wines: Chill the wine in a refrigerator for about 2 hours prior to serving so the wine reaches 45-55 degrees. If you've had your wine chilling in the refrigerator for longer, take it out of the refrigerator for 30 minutes before serving.
For red wines: Contrary to what you may believe, you actually should chill a red wine for 20-30 minutes in a refrigerator or for 2-3 minutes in an ice bucket (especially in the summer) if room temperature is 70-75 degrees. The ideal temperature for reds is 62-67 degrees. (Light, fruity, non-tannic reds can take a bit more cooling if desired.)
Why these guidelines? If you serve wine too warm, you taste the alcohol over the fruit and other components, overemphasizing any bitterness in the wine. If you serve wine too cold, the fruit is stunted and you can't taste its components. |
