Greetings and hope your week is going well. It was quite the emotional week for a lot of folks so far us included. Besides the financial roller coaster we are witnessing there was the sad news of losing our Navy Seals in the attack in Afghanistan. Back in 1989, Rich and a coteacher taught 15 8th Grade students in an Alternative Learning Program in Barnstable. The main reason most of the kids were there was they did not qualify for institutions or they amassed so many detentions in 7th Grade that it was just thought best to keep them self contained. It was quite a year and we all bonded like a survival crew and I taught science after that because it was just too hard to do Alternative Learning. 

 

Navy Seal Kevin Houston 8th Grade BMS

One loud, outgoing, over the top student introduced himself by telling us that one day he would be a Navy Seal. I suggested Kevin start practicing now by leading this crew with model behavior. He liked that idea and did his best and was a haven of sanity in a year that was filled with real craziness. Kevin was one of our 22 Navy Seals that died an American Hero in Afghanistan defending our freedom and our country. It was a sad proud moment for our whole family. In a week that seemed filled with the challenges of putting together the Rockmore Museum Show in Lagrange, starting the French Quarter Museum, getting the kids set for college; we suddenly realized how lucky we were and how precious the time is that we have with each other. Sometimes the things that we take for granted are the most important things we have and sometimes it takes the loss of a Kevin Houston to make you realize that.

Sometimes it is nice to be vested into an artist that is on the brink of major recognition with so many people working hard together to make that happen.
