2nd, Long time Noel Rockmore friend, Dodie Smith-Simmons was on The Oprah Winfrey Show last week as part of her role with the Freedom Riders in the 60s. Dodie also worked at Pres Hall & with Jazzfest and knew Noel quite well. The show was fantastic and gave you an understanding of the courage that Dodie and the Freedom Riders had as they changed our nation's history forever. Dodie was 18 and with CORE in New Orleans when the Freedom Riders that were attacked in Anniston were transported to New Orleans. Dodie's group was asked to find shelter and medical help for the beaten and burned folks and that was not easy to do in segregated New Orleans in 1961.

Dodie's group was then asked to go see if the Poplarville, MS bus station was in compliance with the ICC act as the Freedom Rides wore on. As they drove into Poplarville her heart sank when she saw the angry mob that was to beat them as they tried to enter the station. The leader of her CORE group was beaten so badly he asked Dodie to call RFK who suggested the FBI agents in the area could take them back to New Orleans in their cars. Dodie's group insisted on being taken back to the bus so they could ride to New Orleans as was their right and RFK reluctantly agreed. Dodie's husband John "Kid" Simmons is a noted Jazz Musician and his music is featured in the video,"The World According to New Orleans" that Tee is working on now from Marfa Texas Ballroom where the exhibition featuring Rockmore's continues through August 2011. 

 

3rd, Happy 95th Birthday to Gypsy Lou Webb long time friend of Noel Rockmore and Bohemian French Quarter Icon. Rita Posselt took her to her favorite bar in Slidell to celebrate as Lou is just starting to get up and about after her fall and recovery at Oschners last month. It was quite a year for Lou who lost her sister, her home, lived in a Homeless Shelter, a week in New Orleans, two apartments in Slidell and was featured in the John Ed Bradley Garden & Gun article on Rockmore with a great photo.

Get Well to Jerry & Pat Ducote,who were in a terrible auto accident in Mississippi this past month. Jerry & Pat were very close friends with Rockmore the last 20 years of his life. Jerry was also the carpenter who helped Rockmore create unusual frames and his printing press. They are both home now and although Pat had the most injuries, her 7 mile a day running routine has enabled her to walk again much sooner than the Drs. thought possible. Get Back to our friends at Wickles Pickles, new Rockmore Collectors, that had their homes and workplace wiped out by the Alabama tornados.
