12-2-09 The Noel Rockmore Project Quickie Update |
Caesarean Rockmore work coming up for at New Orleans Auction this weekend.
|
Greetings!
This is a Quickie Update to let you know of another auction of Rockmores coming up this weekend at New Orleans Auction.
We have been working hard on getting things together for January 1, 2010 to begin our first major PR Push for "The Noel Rockmore Project." At that time, we will actually divide the Insiders into those that like to follow the Rockmore's as they come up for auction and those that are mainly interested in the Rockmore story and our efforts to bring it to light.
Tying right into that new birth concept is the major work, "Caesarean" coming up for auction this coming weekend along with three significant pastels.
On a sad note, Gypsy Lou Webb's sister Lee passed away yesterday at a nursing home in Slidell. Lou is upset over the loss but ready to keep doing things as she has always done, "one day at a time." We are happy to forward any notes of sympathy or condolences by snail mail as Lou is a big fan of correspondence but has no computer.
Happy Holidays - One Day at a Time

Lot 1071 "Caesarean", 1988-1989, oil, acrylic, gold leaf, collage, vent stacks, tubing, mixed media on canvas, signed and dated lower right "Rockmore 88 89", 67" x 92". Unframed. Provenance: Bryant Galleries, New Orleans, Louisiana. ESTIMATE 3000 - 5000
Facts: This 88-89 work, pictured in the header, once again combines many of Rockmores favorite subjects and techniques. He seemed to have a fascination with Caesarian sections that started showing up in works around 1985. He then went into a period where he was fascinated with three dimensional tubes and portals and figurines coming out of the canvas. The ropes are all 3D, the portals are plunger heads and the baby that the doctors are delivering is actually a 3D baby under a bubble like glass. You just have to see it in person to begin to fathom it. Rockmore also includes figures from his "Bon Voyage" series as well as "Immigrants" from a future series.
Thoughts: Rockmore really captures the whole Caesarean experience on canvas. We are not sure if he watched it himself (he sometimes was allowed to watch surgeries) or if he just read about it in books. Either way, he captures the experience from many perspectives. Having been present for the Caesarean birth of our 5th and last child it is certainly completely different from other birthing experiences. First, as Rockmore captures, you are more in a surgery (white coats) with many more people all around you. The woman seems almost like a detached part of the experience, strapped in, sedated but completely conscious to all of the surreal experience going on around her. This one is going to be analyzed in detail by the experts in the future when the time comes.
"Caesarean" should certainly be a part of the museum tour when it happens, please let us know if you win it.
Lot 1072 "Showgirls", 1987, pastel on board, signed and dated lower left "Rockmore '87", sight 37-1/2" x 25". Glazed, matted and presented in an ebonized wooden frame. Provenance: Bryant Galleries, New Orleans, Louisiana. ESTIMATE 900 - 1200
Facts: This is part of the second "Backstage Mardi Gras' series in 1987. The first was in 1983 and was mostly oils. This work displays Rockmore's talent with pastels.
Thoughts: Rockmore loved beautiful women with hats on. There is something engaging/disturbing about the expressions on their faces and the red, white and blue colors. If indeed, these pastels were Rockmore's attempt at more palatable commercial work, it is certainly edgy enough in Rockmore's style to make it uniquely his.
Lot 1073 "Superman", 1987, pastel on board, signed and dated lower left "Rockmore '87", sight 37-1/2" x 25". Glazed, matted and presented in an ebonized wooden frame. Provenance: Bryant Galleries, New Orleans, Louisiana. ESTIMATE 900 - 1200
Facts: This too is part of the second "Backstage Mardi Gras" series and also ties into the release that year of Superman 4 with Christopher Reeve. Rockmore also includes a detailed figure moping up with a brilliant use of pastel colors on the sawhorse and background.
Thoughts: It contains a famous deceased celebrity and is a shining example of his pastel work. At some point there will be the inevitable comparison of Rockmore's pastels with Gladys Davis Rockmore, his mother who wrote the book Pastel Painting. The low estimate on these pastels is $900. This could be the last of the big deals before the PR breaks, you just never know.

Lot 1074 "Back to the Quarter", pastel on board, sight 32" x 21-1/2". Glazed, matted and handsomely framed. Provenance: Bryant Galleries, New Orleans, Louisiana. ESTIMATE 900 - 1200
Facts: This is a typical French Quarter scene with folks walking in the streets and the signature lamppost and building in the background (which someone will surely tell us which one it is).
Thoughts: Another great example of Rockmore's genius applied to pastels and New Orleans. It is so interesting how Rockmore draws you to feel and notice things like the shadows on the sidewalk, the figure in black, the buildings, the street crowds. There are plenty of pastels of the French Quarter but rarely do you get to feel what its like to be in it. Do you know what its like to miss New Orleans? "I'll bet I can tell you when & where dat guy in black got his shoes. He's got them on his feet the streets of New Orleans right now." Who dat 11-0? |
