Bryant Gallery Rockmore Get-Together #2 Summary
Greetings!

We have just returned from our 2nd Noel Rockmore Get Together and our 1st Noel Rockmore Project Trade Show event in New Orleans. It was an event filled, action packed week of meeting over 500 new people and then gathering for a magnificent display of over 100 Rockmore works at Bryant Gallery with new and old friends.

The Exhibit at Bryant Galleries on 321 Chartres in New Orleans will be up until April 21. They sold 20 of the 50 Rockmore works they had on display at our event and there are 30 great deals left to be had (negotiation is quite possible - just ask). There is a great chance of picking up your own Rockmore and there is no substitute for seeing over 100 Rockmores in person!

Our first NAEA (National Association of Art Educators) Trade Show Booth(Picture) was a major hit where we walked away with 475 new leads and two successful workshops. Special thanks to the Family Trade Show Crew(picture) includes our moms, daughter Macy & Granddaughter Cady. Thanks to Ken (son-in-law), Tory (son) & Lynne who helped out continuously and daughter Mary, who made it in from Texas.

There is a detailed NAEA Trade Show diary (weblink) for those that are interested in daily details of how a trade show runs. For those interested in the cost of doing their own Booth there is a Trade Show (NAEA) Planning & Cost summary (weblink). This ties into the RightWayWrongWay part of our business where we help others learn how to market themselves from our successes and mistakes.

The Rockmore - Gertrude Morgan Painting(weblink) we told you about last email sold for $18,000 from a bidder on the floor in Tennessee. That was within $1200 of the Gertrude Morgan record and 8K from the Rockmore record. Rockmore prices are certainly moving up, just wait till our PR campaign begins!

Original 1970 Rockmore Jazzfest watercolors will show at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Gallery(weblink) at their very First Exhibition through June 6th, Mon-Fri 10-4PM. This show is located at the Jazz & Heritage Foundation Headquarters on North Rampart Street #1205. Special thanks to Don Marshall (picture) who saw Shirley Marvin's watercolors at the Pres Hall Get-Together and made the concept into a reality.

Below you will find a detailed Summary of our Bryant Gallery opening and our "Who was there?" (photo documentation) of the guests attending the event. We apologize that not all of the photos came out and that we did not collect all of your names. We will do much better in the future, please tell us if we missed you.

For those of you interested in the sale of Shirley Marvin's (3) Cundins we have good news on that front after an amazing coincidence detailed at the bottom of this newsletter in our first Marvin Chronicle.

We will be spending the month of April visiting Rockmore collectors and documenting their works as well as hearing their stories. Let us know if you wish to be included. In May it is time to plan some exciting events to get the word out on The Noel Rockmore Project.

As an Insider, you will be the first to know.

Bryant Gallery Rockmore Get-Together #2 Summary

What a party! Glad you were there and if not, here is how it went down.

Background: We had just finished three days of exhibiting at the NAEA Conference in New Orleans at 3PM. We chose to exhibit at this show because the timing coincided with the opening at Bryant Galleries and we felt that if this Rockmore story had wings outside the Insiders and collectors, the art educators would be the ones to let us know.

The art educators love the Rockmore story. They have come to our booth, seen the works, attended our conferences, and many want to be Insiders and attend the opening at Bryant Galleries. We have packed up the Booth, stored it in storage and are arriving at BryantGallery at 4PM to set up the slide show and make sure all is set.

Glitch #1, #2 & #3 - We Panic when we discover there is champagne available but nothing else and we fear that the Rockmore crowd and teachers sometimes have a different concept of open bar. There also is no bartender and we have not even changed. Shirley Marvin has arrived and is practicing her speech which looks to be 10 pages too long. It will be hard to do a slideshow and her presentation and we still have the bar and bartender crisis to deal with as well as changing from our sweaty trade show clothes and it is 4:30PM.

Solution #1, #2 & #3 - Dodie Smith-Simmons has arrived early and agreed to hear Shirley's speech and give Rich a heads up on how long and appropriate it might be for this occasion. Rich flies out the door after setting up the projector & screen and runs down to the liquor store for supplies (granted being in the French Quarter makes this an easier task). Rich then parks the car (not easy) and as he is running in, he sees son-in-law Ken Litton saying, "Do you need help?" Rich says, "Yes, you are the bartender and Macy (our daughter) is the receptionist, Tee's mom Marie, will help you and take care of the three year old, Cady." Dodie then comes up and says emphatically, "You must let your mom do the entire speech." David Lambert president of Bryant Galleries arrives like the Calvary for the whole event and just like that, all crises are solved at 5PM.

The Event: After, we mix and mingle for an hour it's 6PM, Shirley says she is getting hungry and it's time to get this party started. Rich & Tee gather the folks together, explain the project and quickly introduce the people who are there. Rich starts from the front (xtra special attention for his mother in law-picture) and works his way to the back and there are a lot of guests (well over 100) by the time Shirley finishes her speech. Shirley's speech (Picture) is magnificent and even with the street noise and the fact that she cut it in half, people are fascinated. At least 6 different people come up afterwards and let us know that they would like to see the speech transcribed online in its entirety so here it is - Shirley's Speech on Rockmore (website).

After Shirley concludes Rich takes time to introduce one more special guest who has taken time out of running her own business on a busy Saturday night just to attend this event with her husband. She is easily identified as part of the heart and soul of the "French Quarter that Was". Larry Borenstein was the center of the Quarter universe and the Jaffe's are the ones that shared the Quarter with the world. JoAnn Clevenger(picture) is the one who has kept the spirit of the Quarter and all its intricate connections alive for all of this time through today. It is no surprise she had to have Rockmore's "Homage to the Quarter"(picture) in her Upperline Restaurant along with works of all the other artists who have defined New Orleans. JoAnn Clevenger(silly picture) embodies the spirit of Quarter and as Shirley added, "she serves the best food in town." We were proud to be able to recognize her at the end of our event.

And that is how it ended. It was 7:30PM at that point, we bagged the slideshow, people were thirsty and wanting to mingle, Ken was doing a bang up job as a bartender with his winning phrase, "Just tell me when." Tee took as many pictures as she could while playing hostess. Next time we will delegate a photographer as well as name taker of attendees (we broke our own #1 rule). If we missed you, please let us know you were there especially our teacher friends from the workshops (we only knew you by your faces).

By 8:45PM Shirley was really hungry and Rich used his school teacher training to clear out the Gallery. Daughter Mary joined us and after one final tour of the Rockmore's upstairs it was time to go to Mulates for dinner and Cajun dancing.

Marvin Chronicle #1  - The Jose Maria Cundin Auction -

Two months ago, we noticed Michelle Castro, Director of Fine Arts Consignments at New Orleans Auction Galleries (weblink) had sold the 1st Jose Maria Cundin (Weblink - Great Spanish Artist - still alive and well) documented at auction online for 6K. Shirley has 3 quality works of the same artist and vintage and we thought this might be the time to sell them while he is hot to help finance the Project. A month ago we drop the paintings at New Orleans Auction Galleries and they were ready to be sold with 3-5K estimates on March 29.

On Wednesday, March 26, we stop by Andy Antippas house for 5 minutes to pick up some Rockmore prints to display at the trade show. Andy has an old artist friend visiting and we have some friendly chit-chat but we were in a bit of a rush to set up the trade show booth. The artist says he knew Rockmore and we ask him to write his contact info so we can email him at a later date. We watch as he slowly writes Jose Maria Cundin and both our jaws drop. We have met the artist on a 5 minute random visit to Andy's. What are the chances of that? We knew it was a very good sign at that point!

On Sunday March 29th at the New Orleans Auction, the three Jose Maria Cundin pieces of Shirley Marvin sold at auction for $9000, $7800 & $7200 (pictures)= 24K. Thank you Jose Maria Cundin and of course hats off to Shirley Marvin for having the keen eye for really good art. She knows how to pick them, that is what this whole adventure is all about!
