Coney Island Labyrinth - April 18th 2009 - Neal Auction |
|
Lot 463: "Coney Island Labyrinth,"(Neal Auction Link)
Estimate: $15,000/25,000 Question - What do the following images have in common?
Answer - They are all part of the same Rockmore Masterpiece Painting- "Coney Island Labyrinth" !
This self portrait is one of the "Crown Jewels" of Noel Rockmore. It is an oil on canvas, signed and dated "'58" lower right, signed, titled, inscribed "June July August 10, 1958 painted above Ghost Ride on second floor - and studio - Summer '58, Coney Island" 50 in. x 34 in., framed.
This is THE Major Event in the Rockmore World of Art. It could be argued that it his greatest self portrait and his greatest masterpiece ever. It is quite surprising that it is coming to auction at this time and in this way. There is no doubt it will sell and quite possibly set the World Record for Rockmore which is currently 26.5K for another self portrait.
This will be a STEAL and it will become part of the Rockmore lore forever. We'll keep you posted! |
The Last Supper - April 5th - New Orleans Auction Galleries - Sold $10,200 |
|
Lot 949 - The Last Supper(link) - Estimate $3500-$5000
It turns out that this painting had a lot more to it than you could tell from the picture posted on the Internet. When you see it live in person - you realize that is is easily one of his masterpiece works. It is not surprising that the winning bidder was at the auction house and realized the value when it was being documented and discussed beforehand. At 10.2 K it was a steal!
This shows the eyes going from open to winking to closed. Absolutely stunning when you walk back and forth in front of it. Only Rockmore would try this in 1974!
The last supper is a fried egg (it is 3D) and ham (an unkosher Rockmore joke).
The skyline goes from night to day and seems to be NYC to New Orleans as well.
The left shows interesting details of a disciples hands and the right seems to be a Pontius Pilate figure with a violin (which Rockmore was know for playing).
To the left is a painting of children playing within the painting and to the right is an odd collection of disciples and symbolism. There are many more paintings within this painting, we hope to take it with us on a museum tour one day with the new owners permission. Congratulations to all, especially New Orleans Auction Galleries, well done! |
