Our Davis-Rockmore summer vacation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are so many thoughts that it is hard to put down in order that makes sense. We are in New Orleans now and will be seeing Noel's 5000-7000 negatives on Tuesday which is very exciting. I will just write stream of consciousness of my memories for now and of course will be putting things into a much more logical form when we return to Cape Cod. I reiterate and promise you all Nothing will be printed or shared outside the family without complete family approval first! San Francisco was a real treat - Fisherman's wharf. Chinatown, the Golden Gate and Haight Ashbury filled our first day. On to Bonnie & Deb's. First thing was how great Bonnie looked compared to what we had imagined. If you had told me she would be leading us on adventures in San Leandro 2 months ago we would have called you crazy. We had a great lunch at a favorite place and you got a sense of how loved this couple was amongst the locals. Back to the house for marathon phone conversations with all the kids. Had no idea that we would cover such emotional personal material and history that cuts right to the heart of the family story. We spent the rest of the evening looking at pictures and paintings, eating pizza and getting to know about the early years of Deb's life. Day 2 at Bonnie & Debs. Covered all the unanswered questions we could think of right off the bat. Watched the 100 mile race video, really interesting to see Robin at work and the Canyon painting. Watched Rockmore works slide show we had brought, identified unknown characters. Interesting that in Gladys two girl paintings, it was often the same girl Renee, painted differently. Had an outstanding take out Chinese dinner and watched "They drew fire" to end the wonderful evening. On to Santa Fe and we visited the Georgia O'Keefe museum on our first evening. We like what she represents (independent creative artist doing it her way), we like the style of artwork from your family better and John's interesting funny greeting cards. Found the largest Whole Food Store ever right in Santa Fe. Next day visited John & Emilie at their place, better and more interesting then the O'Keefe Museum, really! It took a few hours just to look at all the walls. Shirley posed for Emilie and we chatted with John about the Putney days and the 1105 get togethers as well as the time between 56-58 when a center of activity was Noel & Betty's place at Des artiste. Delicious steak dinner on the patio right from the grill. Emilie did it all. Started the day with Shirley finishing up the posing and Emilie finishing the pastel. On to the Indian Market which was fun and much easier at closing. Back for more delicious salmon dinner on the patio and then the best treat. Late night art show as Emilie pulled out works from all family members including her own. What a great trip it was. |
