Katy Brandenburg
Apprentice/Naturalist Guide
This Emerson College graduate from rural Maryland found her passion for outdoor education through a naturalist position with Foothill Horizons Outdoor School in Sonora, CA in 2007. From there, Katy went on to teach at several California-based outdoor education institutions, eventually leading her to CFI. Intrigued by the whitewater rafting experience available through CFI's Apprenticeship/Naturalist Guide program, Katy is now adding river guide to her resume.
Kyle Kaiser
Apprentice/Naturalist Guide
Attracted to CFI's naturalist training program and the need to "row his own boat," Kyle most recently worked for Lions Gate Films as an assistant TV music supervisor in Santa Monica, CA and as an expedition canoeing guide with Camp Thunderbird in Minnesota during the summer of 2009. This Texas native graduated from the University of the South - Sewanee, of Sewanee, TN in 2007 with a degree in natural resources and one day hopes to start his own environmental renovation & design business.
Kate Niederehe Program Intern
Originally from outside Washington, D.C, Kate is leading CFI's new scheduled, weekend day-tours this season. Kate graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor's in rehabilitation psychology, but a move to Maryland in 2008 spurred a career focus change to outdoor education and wilderness therapy. Her previous outdoor education experience includes instructor and facilitator roles with outdoor education programs in both Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Carly Griffin
Public Relations Intern
Carly comes to CFI from the Nashville Area Red Cross Chapter and before that, the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, where she assisted with marketing and communications for both organizations. Graduating from Belmont University of Nashville, TN in Dec. 2008 with a bachelor's in mass communications, she made the move to Moab this season with the goal of broadening her non-profit marketing experience specifically in the areas of event planning and grant writing for smaller-sized non-profits.
Dave Malutich Americorps Intern Dave majored in environmental studies at the University of North Carolina - Asheville and following graduation he headed back to his home state of Wyoming to work for both Big Horn National Forest and the Wyoming Wilderness Association. As the Americorps Intern for CFI this spring, his primary responsibilities are to serve as Professor Valley Field Camp's caretaker and operations assistant. Looking forward, Dave hopes to continue a career in outdoor education & conservation, working specifically with young adults.

In Good Company: Moonflower Market
| |
CFI would like to send our sincerest thank you to Moab's Community Natural Food Store, Moonflower Market, for their continued support. In April Moonflower Market's 5% Day was once again held in honor of CFI, where 5% of proceeds for that day were donated directly to CFI's school and youth programs, such as the Outdoor Science School and Young Explorer Base Camps. Cassie Paup, owner and manager of the local market, understands first-hand the contributions CFI makes to the Moab community due in part to her daughter's participation in the 8th Grade Outdoor Science School program this year. "I believe CFI to be an important part of [our] community [because] they have been bringing students an important piece of their education for years," said Paup. "I think Moab would be at a loss without them." You can visit Moonflower Market at 39 East 100 North, across from the Post Office. For more information on how you can donate to CFI call us (435)-259-7750 or visit us online at www.cfimoab.com. |

Nature Note: Quoth the raven "Nevermore"
|
|
Three days in to our staff training trip on the San Juan River this past March, I learned the golden rule, "don't feed the ravens." A misplaced peanut at our camp that afternoon quickly brought the total of camp guests that night from four to five, and I thought I would take this opportunity to get to know our "mystery eater." Did You Know?
- Ravens can be tamed and taught to mimic human speech.
- Ravens have among the largest brains of any bird species.
- Having a lifespan of 10-15 years in the wild, ravens are also known to live to up 40 years when in captivity.
Often depicted as an ill omen because of their all-black exterior and reputation as a scavenger, these members of the crow family are actually highly intelligent birds with known problem solving abilities.
Characteristics that separate the raven from its crow cousin, besides its larger size, are its larger beak, a shaggy throat, and wedge-shaped tail. It may come to a surprise to some that the raven is a "family-bird" who mates for life, where both males and females share the parenting role.
| Native American mythology describes the raven as a "trickster" which is defined as individuals whose actions have been credited to a natural phenomenon such as the creation of the earth and sun. Ravens are viewed a mediator between life and death to certain Native American tribes. To learn more visit National Geographic.
