Greetings!

Violence in the workplace is a serious safety and health issue. Its most extreme form, homicide, is the fourth-leading cause of fatal occupational injury in the United States.

According to Northwestern National Life, one-fourth of employees view their jobs as the leading stressor in their lives. While OSHA reports that work-related homicides have fallen 52% since 1994 to about 507 a year, many workplace violence experts feel that overall violence in the workplace has been rising steadily due to the recession.

We invite you to read compelling articles on workplace violence prevention featured in Security Magazine and the Hartford Business Journal.  And we inviite you listen to Lars Larson's radio interview with Rich Cordivari who leads training initiatives at AlliedBarton Security Services, www.alliedbarton.com, America's leading physical security services company.

"According to a study done by the National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health, more than 70% of US workplaces do not have a formal program or policy in place to address workplace violence," writes Mimi Lanfranchi, Senior Vice President for AlliedBarton Security Services in Security Magazine. "As security professionals, it is our role to ensure the physical security and safety of our employees, visitors, facilities and assets.  And while we are trained to recognize potential workplace violence behavior stages, we must also seek to educate those within our organizations from executives to support staff, to recognize workplace violence trigger points. Creating a corporate culture that promotes, 'if you see something, say something' can have lifesaving consequences."

Workplace Safety Needs High Priority
"The attempted car bombing in Times Square  penetrated the nation's consciousness, awakening fear and uncertainty as people go about their daily lives," writes Rich Cordivari, Vice President of Learning and Development for AlliedBarton Security Services. "Everyone needs to be vigilant, take notice of their surroundings, and report suspicious items or activities to local authorities immediately.

In the case of the alleged Times Square terrorism attempt, it was the vigilance of a quick-thinking street vendor, who witnessed smoke coming from an SUV and alerted police that likely helped save hundreds of lives.

People cannot live in fear and our best defense is to take action when something does not look right and to be prepared for the unexpected. Read Rich's disaster management tips in the Hartford Business Journal:
